Spring Gardening Tips and a Seattle Garden Party Invitation

Whiskey Barrels for Planting Herbs and Veggies

I have an invite for locals to The Home Depot for a garden party at the end of this post so be sure to check it out!

I had a productive weekend getting started on projects in my backyard. Friends from church came by and helped with winter clean-up and prepping the area we plan to use for vegetable and herb gardens. It’s wonderful to have people who jump in and help!

backyard gardening

This year our plan is to create a simple, manageable garden. Our yard is very rocky, so above-ground planting is the easiest option. Raised containers also keep our dogs from trampling the plants when they run through. Container gardening feels less intimidating and more practical, so it’s a great place to begin.

Whiskey Barrel Planters

I found cedar whiskey barrels at The Home Depot that are perfect for vegetables and herbs. They’re versatile and can be tucked into many spots around the yard. Once everything is planted I’ll share what I grew, how I planted it, and updates as the plants develop. I didn’t see these barrels online, so check your local store.

Spring Gardening

We brought home a variety of plants to try this season.

Sweet Basil

I’ve always enjoyed growing herbs in containers — they’re handy and rewarding. Last year we grew blueberries and tomatoes, and this year I’m expanding to strawberries, kale, several types of lettuce, and other vegetables. We aim to eat organic whenever possible, so I’m excited to have fresh produce from our own yard.

Strawberry Plants

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to plan a proper vegetable garden, but it’s never too late to try something new. I’m looking forward to learning and improving each season.

gardening book ideas

To avoid common mistakes, we picked up a few gardening books last year. They’ve been helpful as we learn what works best for our space and climate. Our reading list has been a good resource for beginners like us.

Spring Garden Party @ the Home Depot

On May 17th I’m co-hosting a spring gardening event in Seattle sponsored by The Home Depot Garden Club. I hope locals can join — it will be a fun afternoon full of tips from experts and hands-on activities.

Join me at the Issaquah Home Depot on Saturday, May 17, for the Seattle Garden Party. There will be DIY garden stations, garden-to-table food with recipes from a local chef, and an expert Gardeniere leading an herb container garden project and answering questions. The Gardenieres are experienced gardeners with practical advice for growing plants in many settings.

Whether you’re just starting a container garden or already have a thriving yard, you’ll pick up useful ideas and walk away with more confidence. We hope you can come celebrate with us!

In the meantime, share your garden moments and spring celebrations using the hashtag #SpringMadeSimple and explore The Home Depot Garden Club for tips and local gardening advice.

This event and my participation is sponsored by The Home Depot.
