I took a quick trip to the market the other day. There’s a charming market in Poulsbo not far from where I live that I enjoy visiting. It’s mostly food, but they have a lovely flower section, and I couldn’t resist browsing the spring blooms. The colors and varieties were irresistible. I kept picking up stems, trying different combinations, and texting photos to my daughter Courtney to share my delight. She’s used to my enthusiastic messages when I find pretty things and always pauses to indulge me in important discussions about flower pairings. Before long I had chosen just the right ones.
Note to self: PLANT MORE SPRING FLOWERS IN THE YARD for cut flowers. Must.

When I returned home I swapped out the winter stems in my door basket, filled three jars with water, and arranged the fresh spring blooms. Instant joy—everything looked so bright and cheerful. Inspired, I tidied the porch and cleared away a few random items (including an embarrassing discovery: a tiny, shriveled, moldy pumpkin hiding behind some planters—yes, it had been there through the season). It only took a few minutes to refresh the porch, but it made a noticeable difference.
It’s easy to spend our energy taking care of everyone else and neglect the small comforts that lift our spirits. A little TLC for our home can feel surprisingly restorative. A new bouquet, a clean porch, or a simple swap of seasonal decor is a quick way to celebrate the change in season and treat yourself.
So, if you haven’t already, let’s say goodbye to winter.
Go treat yourself to some pretty flowers this week.
If it’s still snowing where you are (I’m sorry!), you definitely need some spring blooms on your table.
