Small Backyard Deck Makeover: Before and After Transformation

Pretty Small Deck

I t seems like every summer I freshen up both my front porch and back deck. Both areas are compact—the deck is especially tiny—but they’re big enough to relax in and enjoy. The front porch greets visitors at the entry, while the back deck is visible and accessible from the kitchen, so both spaces feel like part of the home rather than afterthoughts.

When we first moved in the back deck offered no privacy; it was completely exposed to the neighbors and not very inviting.

Deck Before

Besides the lack of privacy, the deck needed a lot of help. We weren’t interested in a major renovation, so we focused on simple, cost-effective updates. Over the years the space has evolved a bit each summer. I prefer practical choices that deliver big visual impact without a huge investment—trellises, paint, and lots of plants have become the backbone of our improvements.

A few years ago we attached a few attractive store-bought trellises to the deck. They were inexpensive and transformed the feel of the space. We planted wisteria and evergreen vines in pots to increase privacy through most of the year. Plants thrive on the deck, which makes it feel lush and inviting with minimal effort.

I love looking out the kitchen window in summer when the plants are full and green.

The vines do a great job of softening and screening the deck, creating a private green backdrop without much maintenance.

Last year we added an indoor/outdoor rug and brought in more plants, while moving the larger deck furniture to a gravel patio down in the yard. A small tea cart ended up on the front porch. These modest changes helped define the deck as a separate, cozy zone rather than a cluttered afterthought.

This year our goal was to make the space feel even cozier by adding furniture that fits the narrow deck without overwhelming it.

We found four slipper chairs on sale that originally belonged to a sectional. They’re versatile and light enough to rearrange as needed for different seating configurations. The cushions have removable, outdoor-friendly covers that wipe clean easily. Accent pillows and a small garden stool finish the seating area and add color. To provide just the right amount of shade, we chose two compact five-foot umbrellas sized perfectly for our tiny deck.

Now the deck is a comfortable little retreat where we can enjoy coffee, read, or even work on a laptop.

Related note: I’ve written about adding personality to small outdoor spaces and how a few thoughtful choices—privacy screens, layered plants, appropriately scaled furniture, and textiles—can make a compact deck feel like an inviting extension of the home.
