Settling In: Creating a Cozy New Reading Corner at Home

The Inspired Room Reading Corner - Entry

Our front room has evolved many times. It began as a traditional living room, but since we already had a family room and a TV room, we decided a larger sofa and extra chairs weren’t necessary. What we truly wanted was more breathing room. With a small entry and dining area nearby and this room acting largely as a pass-through, it made sense to rethink the space as a flexible gathering area—somewhere to enter the house comfortably and expand seating when guests arrive.

This multi-purpose approach suited us well, though the room is small and offers essentially one full wall and very tall ceilings, which limits layout options.

We experimented with several arrangements over the years, none of which felt completely final. We’re getting closer, but rooms always evolve in our house.

Recently we’ve focused on how to make the most of the space we have, working within a modest budget and uncertain long-term plans. I wanted built-ins, but I hesitated to commit. Since we’ve moved several times in the past, we’re cautious about permanent changes. At the same time, we are staying and want to make this house feel like home, so we looked for less permanent solutions that still improve function and comfort.

Restoration Hardware Book Cabinet

This year we made organization a priority, so we began hunting for storage pieces and furniture to help. Although I’ve long imagined built-in cabinets and bookshelves here, a freestanding piece felt more sensible for now. After an extended search we found the right cabinet at Restoration Hardware. It fit the length and depth needed for the wall, solved our size challenge, and added useful storage for books, entertaining dishes, and a buffet surface for larger gatherings. Glass doors brighten the space and protect contents from dust, which is useful because the entry and front door are opposite the cabinet.

Until now I’d mostly purchased secondhand or inexpensive furniture, so choosing a few new pieces mixed with flea market finds was a meaningful change. The right items can transform how a small home functions; one well-chosen piece can anchor a room and greatly increase usefulness.

We had previously used a smaller bookcase with glass doors, but it didn’t fill the wall well. The new, longer cabinet makes far better use of the space; we relocated the smaller case to the bedroom.

Scale matters—often bigger works better in small rooms.

The cabinet inspired a cozy reading nook. Though I once considered a built-in window seat, I ultimately chose a freestanding settee to keep the area flexible. A large sofa would have crowded the space and interfered with traffic to the dining room and kitchen. The settee we selected from Birch Lane felt just right: compact enough to preserve flexibility, but comfortable and practical for putting on shoes, chatting with guests, or curling up with a book or laptop. Its high back and winged silhouette suit the room’s tall ceilings and large window.

Many of the accessories were budget-friendly finds: lamps from Target, a small round table from Lamps Plus, decorative pillows from Joss & Main and West Elm, and a Turkish towel found at a flea market. These smaller pieces add texture and personality without overwhelming the room. Seasonal accents, like plush pumpkins, bring a cozy touch.

I’m considering adding a round ottoman in front of the settee for added comfort. For now, our dog Jack enjoys claiming the rug as his spot. Furniture at our house is free to move as needs change, and this cabinet already provides more structure and function. It feels like a grown-up piece that will likely stay in place for a long time.

We still dream of adding white planking to the walls and eventually the peaked ceiling, but for now we’re taking the room one step at a time and enjoying incremental progress.

So, are you ready to do some Fall nesting?

This settee was provided by Birch Lane. As always, all opinions are my own.
