Seasonal Front Door Decor: Transitioning from Fall to Winter

I wanted something fresh to hang on my door to bridge fall into winter. Since I already had a wreath on the porch and planned to add some greenery to the windows, I didn’t want to repeat the same wreath idea. I was hoping for something a little different and seasonal, but still simple.

While searching a local gift shop I found frosted twigs, pine cones, branches with red berries and a few rusty jingle bells. We don’t have many trees on our property yet, so I picked up the greenery I needed rather than snipping from a yard. If you have pretty evergreens or branches at home, you could definitely use those instead. I decided to arrange the pieces in a hanging basket and give it a small, personal twist.

The photos don’t do this arrangement full justice; the camera made the greens look off, but in person the tones are natural and pleasing. I nearly skipped sharing it because the pictures looked odd, but my husband thought it looked “dramatic” and loved it. That endorsement convinced me to show it here.

Stepping back for a wider view: our home has a craftsman-lodge vibe and from the porch you can glimpse the nearby lake, so I like to imagine we live right on the water. Being in the Northwest, our surroundings include evergreens, water and mountains, so I call this look “NW coastal.” That label helps guide my decorating choices and lets me mix unexpected elements with confidence.

To personalize the arrangement I bundled a few oversized cinnamon sticks with brown twine and attached a large white starfish. The cinnamon adds visual texture among the greenery and fills the porch with a warm, spicy scent that makes the entry feel cozy—almost like baking is happening inside.

The starfish paired with evergreens complements the house’s style and feels more playful and coastal than a traditional evergreen wreath. To give the basket more depth I tucked in additional white shells and pine cones, balancing color and texture for a cohesive look.

And that’s my NW coastal front door decor—a simple, seasonal arrangement that blends evergreen charm with coastal accents and a hint of spice for a welcoming entry.
