Have you ever purchased scented pinecones from a store? I used to buy them every year until I discovered that some synthetic fragrances made me feel unwell. Scents can be comforting and uplifting when they are natural and non-toxic. Making your own DIY scented pinecones is simple, affordable, and allows you to control the ingredients. Below I’ll share the easy method I use.

I keep a box of beautiful large pinecones for seasonal decor, but during our recent move I misplaced them. If you have pine trees nearby, a short walk is often all it takes to find perfect cones. Foraging for natural decor is rewarding and free. If pinecones aren’t available where you live, you can also buy unscented bags of pinecones ready to use.

Scented pinecones are very similar to potpourri but require fewer ingredients, making them a great introduction to natural home fragrance. Use a mix of sizes or stick with one size—pinecones are durable and can be reused for years.
My pinecones are small enough to display in a shallow bowl on a compact entry table. Larger cones can be arranged in a basket on the floor or hung in a basket for a striking display. They also work wonderfully in a bathroom—smaller rooms hold scent better, so a few cones go a long way.

I love the natural colors and textures of pinecones. When I make potpourri I add other elements and colors, but for a simple, organic look these pinecones straight from the forest are beautiful on their own.

Here’s how to make DIY scented pinecones
There are many ways to scent pinecones; this is my preferred, straightforward method.
- Place pinecones in a large pot and cover them with water.
- Add cinnamon sticks and a few drops of your chosen essential oils. Use amounts to suit the number and size of pinecones—the oils provide the fragrance while the cinnamon adds warmth. Cover with water.
- Bring the pot to a gentle boil and simmer for 5–10 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and let the pinecones sit in the covered pot for about two hours to absorb the scent.
- Remove pinecones and set them on paper towels to dry completely.
- For a stronger, longer-lasting scent, place dry pinecones in a paper or zip-top bag, add 10–20 drops of essential oil (or more to taste), shake gently to distribute, seal the bag, and let them rest for several days. Add fresh drops as needed to refresh the fragrance.
Enjoy—and happy fall!
