Quick Romantic Getaway to San Juan Island by Car

Wanna come with me on a drive by on San Juan Island?

Or more like a walk by—that’s the unhurried pace of a getaway like this.

It felt like ages since I’d been away from the blog and my online friends. Last week I tucked myself away for a short escape to a B&B on San Juan Island with my husband. At the time I kept the destination quiet—privacy and safety first.

With the busy life we lead—running a business, church commitments, and family responsibilities—time alone together without kids or pets is rare. This trip was probably the first time in about 18 years we had an extended getaway just the two of us. Week-long escapes don’t come easily for us, so we savored it.

When the chance unexpectedly came up, I shut down the blog for a few days and we drove a few hours, then took a one-hour ferry to San Juan Island. My daughter was recovering well from her appendectomy, and my parents kindly stayed to look after Jack the puppy. We had a leadership conference later in the week, but the first days were all about rest and exploring the island.

I fell in love with the homes and their colorful details. The landscaping in Roche Harbor caught my eye—the textures, shapes, and hues were captivating.

Getting close to these houses made me chuckle; I half expected someone to swing a frying pan at me from the porch. Still, I couldn’t resist approaching this porch to admire the teal-green roof and the charming details up close.

One blue house, still unfinished, practically swept me off my feet. Its color and style were unforgettable.

FABULOUS, right? I wondered about the future owners—hopefully they’ll welcome curious neighbors once they move in.

We also visited an alpaca farm on the island. Those animals were energetic and playful—so much personality. They behave like siblings: mischievous, affectionate, and delightfully odd.

Back to more quaint moments, I had a strong sense of deja vu when I spotted a restaurant that reminded me of childhood. It was one of those places that sticks in your memory.

The hotel we strolled past had a refined, classic charm—likely attracting guests who enjoy golf shirts and yachts. No judgment if you wear golf shirts or own a yacht; I’d love a yacht too. I even saw a seven-million-dollar yacht in the harbor.

The garden in front of the hotel was beautifully aged and full of personality. I could have spent hours studying the plants and the arrangement—each bed felt intentionally layered and timeless.

One flower surprised me with a scent that honestly seemed like chocolate. I’ve never encountered a blossom that smelled quite like that before.

We also discovered a lovely lavender farm. As expected, it smelled wonderfully of lavender—calming and restorative.

There’s a special pleasure in wandering charming streets, popping into small shops, and lingering over a leisurely cup of coffee. Those unhurried moments make a trip memorable.

And as someone who’s always loved the sea, walking among the boats in the harbor was easily my favorite part. The combination of salt air, moored vessels, and quiet docks is hard to beat.

Good memories, lovely place.

Where have you escaped to this summer? I’d love to hear about your summer adventures!
