Painted Nightstand: French Linen Annie Sloan Chalk Paint
Months ago I found a mirrored nightstand at HomeGoods for my side of the bed. Our previous nightstands were too large for our smaller bedroom, so we needed to start over. There wasn’t a matching piece at the store, and I couldn’t find one elsewhere, but I wanted my husband’s nightstand to be unique. I began searching for a piece that would suit his side of the bed.
Before
Finding the right size and height that would complement my mirrored nightstand proved harder than I expected. After a while I found a vintage Henry Link three-drawer dresser that was almost perfect. Although the glossy, yellow-ish finish didn’t match our room at all, the size and style were right. We decided that a fresh coat of paint would make it ideal for our small bedroom.

Life got busy and the dresser sat for a while before we tackled it. The surface was very shiny, and we didn’t want to spend time sanding and priming, so we reached for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. We had used it successfully on our stone fireplace before, so we trusted it to cover the glossy finish and update the piece with minimal prep.
After
This time we chose the French Linen color. It felt like the right choice for our dark plum bedroom and it coordinates well with the grayish tone of my other nightstand. The transformation was simple and rewarding. We applied two brush coats of paint and protected the finish with Annie Sloan’s clear wax. If you prefer a more worn or shabby look, you can lightly sand the edges after painting to reveal some of the original finish.

Little by little the room is coming together. When the final touches are complete, I’ll share the full room makeover so you can see all the details in one post.
