Master Bedroom Makeover: New Bed, Rug and Luxe Bedding

This post in partnership with Serena and Lily

We’ve made major progress on our master bedroom makeover. Our new bed, bedding, and rug have arrived, and I’m in love with how everything looks together. You’ll also see our new shutters in these photos; I’ll share more about them in a separate post.

If you’re new here, we moved into our Seattle house about two and a half years ago. The small room that became our master originally had sunny yellow walls. It was cheerful, but I couldn’t wait to repaint and make it cozier.

For a while we painted the room a deep plum that made the space feel like a snug cocoon—and we loved it. After the long process of moving and remodeling, it was comforting to have a retreat that felt safe and snug for two years.

Eventually we wanted the room to reflect the style we were developing in the rest of the house. We remodeled the kitchen from top to bottom and used that as the style anchor for the home. As rooms began to come together, the house felt more cohesive and balanced.

My mom was ready to get back the sleigh bed we’d borrowed for a few years, and I finally got the cane bed I’d had on my dream board for ages. I love its classic silhouette and cane detailing. It’s also the right scale for our room, which measures 12 by 14 feet.

The previous bed looked nice but was visually heavy—curvy, bulky, and dark. The new bed feels much more streamlined with a straight headboard and footboard. Its taller clearance and slender legs make the room feel more open, and we can see nearly the entire rug under the bed, which improves the room’s proportion.

The footboard is just the right height to keep our dog Lily from tumbling out of bed while still being low enough that Jack can hop on easily. It’s a perfect balance of form and function.

I love how the wood, cane, white, and blue palette reflects the direction we’re taking the house—clean, relaxed, and subtly coastal. That aesthetic fits our location overlooking Puget Sound and helps create continuity throughout our home.

The bedding has small, thoughtful details I really enjoy: patterned shams, fringed sheets, stitched quilting, and a tassel-trimmed throw. The whimsical Dhurrie rug adds softness and pattern that ties the room together. The deep fitted sheets were a welcome surprise—no wrestling them onto the mattress.

We’re pleased with the progress so far. There are a few more tweaks we hope to make someday—like deciding on the mirrored closet doors—but for now this feels like a great stopping point.

This room is now serene, comfortable, and welcoming.

We also installed plantation-style shutters, which have made a big difference in the room’s finish and light control. I’ll share installation details separately.
