In autumn and winter — and honestly year-round — my favorite room is our cozy bedroom. It’s small, but that only adds to the sense of a snug little nest. It’s my retreat, the comfortable place I look forward to at the end of each day.
On a chilly evening there’s nowhere I’d rather be than tucked up here. We still dream of a new bed frame (we’ve been borrowing one from my mom) and we need a new mattress (we’ve been using a guest-room mattress while we decide), but despite those hand-me-downs we make our bed as inviting and comfortable as possible.

Earlier this year my husband painted the room a deep plum (Black Frosted Plum by Glidden) and we still love it. The walls used to be yellow, which likely pleased the previous owner, but painting made the space feel like ours. Paint really can transform a room and make it reflect who you are.
Because the room is small, we embraced its size and leaned into a cozy, moody, and romantic feel. You spend a large portion of your life resting and sleeping, so making the bedroom comfortable and special matters to me.

A few months ago I found a vintage dresser to use as my husband’s nightstand after searching for months. It complements my furniture while meeting his needs, and we both love it. I’ll share a before-and-after makeover soon with full details.

I’ll post an update with more angles once we finish the other side of the room. After getting the nightstand we were sidetracked by other projects, so the remaining task is a dresser on the opposite wall — a small and patient plan.
Big purchases like a mattress or dresser require time and money, so we focus on what we can do now to make the room feel like a sacred space.

If you’ve read my books or followed the blog, you know I believe in making the bed every day.
- Make your bed so you can start the day on the right note.
- Make your bed so it feels worthy of your sanctuary.
- Make your bed to inspire you to keep the rest of the room tidy.
- Make your bed so you’ll look forward to crawling in at night.
- Make your bed so you sleep better.
- Make your bed so it brings a little happiness all day long.
Within the first hour after getting up (and after airing the bed), I do a quick, relaxed bed-making: toss the covers up and arrange the pillows at the head. It’s not perfect and that’s fine — I call it messy-making and it works for us.
My dogs sometimes sneak in after I make the bed and send pillows to the floor, much like toddlers with fur. Usually I catch them in time and keep the linens off the floor. If I didn’t make the bed, the pups would happily curl up on the sheets, so there’s another practical reason to keep it made.

Beyond the routine of making the bed, I believe quality linens and well-chosen sheets make a real difference. They improve comfort and make the bed look and feel luxurious, turning the room into a true sanctuary. When a room feels special, I’m more motivated to care for it.
I’m often cautious when buying new bedding. I usually own only one or two sheet sets at a time and don’t want to invest in something I won’t love. When Crane and Canopy offered to send a set of sheets and a duvet cover, I was initially hesitant because I hadn’t tried their products before.

After trying their bedding, I’m completely happy with the sheets, shams, and duvet cover we received. They feel soft and luxurious. My husband, who rarely comments on bedding, noticed the scalloped detail and liked it as well. That small design touch made a positive impression.
Crane and Canopy offer high-quality 100% cotton bedding and sell directly so they can keep prices reasonable without compromising quality. Their weaves are typically in the 300–400 thread-count range, which delivers the softness and durability I expect.

Their duvet covers come in many colors and some reversible patterns. They’re machine washable and include practical details like corner ties, easy-care zippers, and piping. Crane and Canopy also sell sheets separately, so you can mix and match to create a customized look that suits your style.
I’ve found their bedding genuinely elevates the bed’s appearance and comfort, so I’m pleased to recommend them as a brand I now trust.
How you make your bed can shape your day. This fall, consider making your bed and turning your bedroom into a cozy sanctuary.
