Carefree Summer

Last week I took a day off and even declined a conference call with HGTV and designer David Bromstad so I could spend the day with my son. I shut down my computer, turned off my phone, and we enjoyed a peaceful, technology-free day together as a family.

Finding time to relax during summer can be difficult for us. My husband and I work from home, and right now we’re in an especially busy, demanding season of life. Because of that, we have to be intentional about stepping away from screens and schedules so a day off really feels like a day off.

We’ve planned many more of these deliberate, carefree, computer-free days this summer—times to play, rest, and reconnect without interruptions.

I recently shared some of the ideas that help us make the most of summer at home: practical tips for slowing down, creating simple family rhythms, and enjoying quiet moments together. These small changes help transform ordinary days into memorable ones.

Whether it’s a picnic in the backyard, an afternoon of board games, or a walk around the neighborhood, the point is to be fully present and savor the season. When we commit to unplugging and leave room for unhurried time, our family returns refreshed and more connected.
