This year we tried a fresh approach with our faux cedar garland, making it look fuller and more festive with a few simple additions. I love the result. While plain cedar or pine garland can be beautiful on its own, layering and embellishing turns an inexpensive strand into something that feels custom and elevated.
Why I Decorate for Christmas Early
We started decorating early to be ready for family arriving at Thanksgiving. For us, the holidays overlap: being thankful and feeling festive can happen at the same time. We often enjoy Thanksgiving dinner by the Christmas tree.
Decorating ahead of time makes the process calmer and more enjoyable. Getting the messy work done early means less stress during the holidays and more time to focus on family and gratitude. It also lets you savor the season instead of rushing through it.
How Faux Garland Keeps Decorating Simple
Faux garland is ideal for early decorating since it won’t dry out or shed needles. I still enjoy fresh cedar and sometimes add a few real sprigs, but faux pieces let me set things up early without the maintenance. For areas like the porch, I often use fresh garland and avoid storing it indoors.

Make Garland Look Fuller by Using Two or More Strands
I pulled out last year’s cedar garland and an older strand already decorated with pinecones and berries. The idea to hang them together transformed the look instantly. Having a helper makes the task easier, though it’s doable solo.

Because our railing is small, decorating was quick and affordable. If you want a fuller look you can pair different garlands or use multiple strands of the same type. Alternatively, add decorations directly to a single strand. There are many ways to achieve a rich, finished look without spending a lot.

How to Hang Two Garland Strands Together On a Stair Railing
Start by securing the main garland to the railing with twine. Don’t trim the loose ends until the final adjustments are made so you can re-tie if necessary. Next, place the second garland over the first and tie it in a few spots. You can also tie the two strands together where they overlap to keep them aligned. Twine is simple, effective, and gives a cozy, homemade touch.

How to Add Dried Oranges to Your Garland
After layering the garlands we decided to add dried oranges for a citrus accent. Poke a small hole near the edge of each dried slice, thread clear fishing line or thin twine through, and tie them to the garland at intervals. The warm color contrasts nicely with green foliage and adds an organic, seasonal detail.

Add Nautical Rope and Bells for Extra Charm
We debated ribbon but instead used nautical rope to introduce texture and a coastal vibe. Tying knots and adding an antique set of bells finished the look. Let the rope ends fray slightly or separate the strands to create a tassel-like fringe. Small unexpected elements like these make the garland feel personal and curated.

How to Keep Christmas Decorating Simple
You can always add more layers and accents, but simplicity is often the most satisfying approach. A modestly decorated staircase or mantel can feel complete and festive without being overdone. If inspiration strikes later, you can build on what’s already in place, but having something finished early is a relief and a joy to enjoy through the season.

That little brainstorming sparked another idea for my garland—so I might continue tweaking it. What do you think of embellished garland?
