Last week I added a beautiful statement rug and swapped the chair legs in our bedroom.
This spring I thought I wouldn’t work on the bedroom over the summer — only the deck — but inspiration had other plans.
Now I’m decorating the bedroom, and I’m glad I stayed open to change.
That’s how creativity works: stay flexible and be ready when an idea strikes.
What’s that saying? If you give a mouse a cookie… well, I do love cookies.

Decorating gets more fun once you have a standout piece.
Below I share my thoughts on the new rug, decorating tips, and what I’m considering next for the room.
The new bed gave the room a whimsical, coastal-cottage feeling, and the rug pairs perfectly with that vibe.
When I ordered the rug I wasn’t sure where it would end up, but it feels right here and I’ve really fallen for it.
It even features coastal birds in the pattern — the moment I spotted them I knew the rug belonged here.
We’ll probably repaint the room and rearrange the art when that happens, but I’ll always love these bird prints.

Take time to experiment with combinations until the room feels right for you.
I love the pattern and colors of this rug — the tones read like denim blue, warm browns, golden yellows, and a subtle hint of mauve/pink. Screens can shift hues, but those are the shades I see in person.
The rug coordinates nicely with other rugs I own, which makes it versatile; if I decide to move it, it would look great layered over another neutral rug.
I’ll try different bedding pairings and share what works as I refine the look.
It’s tempting to play it safe, but choosing something you truly love can transform a room.
A simple swap can refresh a chair.
After placing the rug, I remembered the chair leg update I’d bought months ago. We replaced the legs and it instantly gave the chair a fresher vibe that suits the room.
Curtain panels
We installed checked chambray curtains a couple of years ago and still love them. They were affordable, so I feel free to change them later if I want a new look. I also love the rods we used.
We need new shades for the French doors, so I’ll be looking for options that fit the room’s style.
Furniture and lighting
We almost moved this chair downstairs, but our pup Lily loves it here and often naps on it. I move furniture regularly, though, so we’ll see what settles.
The wood bead ceiling fixture was installed recently and still feels right in the room. I’m also considering lamps and a floor lamp to complete the lighting scheme.
Make changes over time.
We brought a white bookcase from our last house — it could be painted or left as is. Our walls need repainting, but that’s a project for another day. I’ll be on the lookout for nightstands and possibly a new dresser, but I won’t rush those decisions.
We love having a small deck right outside our bedroom — it’s become a relaxing extension of the space.
I once dreamed of turning a small bedroom into a primary suite with French doors to a patio. That idea has come true here, and we’re so grateful.
This room has become our sanctuary — better than I imagined.
