Today I’m sharing one of my favorite frugal yet luxurious decorating secrets that works for every season, but especially at Christmas. It’s simple, quick, and creates a layered, custom look without buying anything extravagant. Ready for the trick? Take notes—this one is worth remembering.
Step One:
Choose two wreaths with contrasting textures and place them together.
That’s it.
No wiring, no glue, no stapling, no tools—just hang or nest them together and you’re done. This technique instantly elevates inexpensive or plain wreaths into something rich and textured.
I often combine a fresh or faux evergreen wreath with a branchy, twig, or driftwood style wreath from a previous year. Layering a lush green wreath over a woodsy base gives the result a custom, boutique look—like you spent a lot more than you did. For a seasonal or coastal twist, tuck a few white starfish, shells, or other small accents into the layers to make the focal wreath pop.

This year I repurposed a branchy wreath I’ve had since my 2009 Christmas mantel and layered a new evergreen wreath from a home improvement store on top. I hung both from the same hook above the mantel. The combination added depth and texture, transforming inexpensive pieces into a layered focal point.

On my entry table I layered a driftwood wreath with a white pom-pom style wreath for a lighter, summery feel that still reads festive. I placed candle decorations in the center to finish the vignette. In another year I combined the twig-style mantel wreath with the pom-pom wreath to create an entirely new look.
This method works for any combination: evergreen over twig, pom-pom over grapevine, driftwood under holiday greenery. If two wreaths look pleasing together, they’ll work. The approach is especially good for thin or sparse wreaths—layering gives you a fuller, more textured result that looks polished and intentional.
Why this trick is so useful:
- Cost-effective: transform existing wreaths instead of buying new ones.
- Fast: no crafting skills or tools required.
- Versatile: mix seasonal and non-seasonal pieces for year-round decor.
- Customizable: add small accents like ornaments, shells, or ribbon to refine the style.
Simple, chic, and repeatable. Layering wreaths is one of those easy decorating moves that yields a high-impact result with almost no effort. Try different combinations until you find ones you love—there are endless possibilities.
You’re welcome!
PS: If you enjoy wreath projects, consider trying a double wreath chandelier for a more involved but magical display for the holidays or a special event.
