Kitchen Puttering: Simple Ways to Enjoy Cooking Time

When we remodeled our kitchen, I pictured how lovely it would be to watch the pink-and-white magnolia bloom just outside the window. It’s every bit as beautiful as I imagined. Standing at the counter, doing small tasks, I find myself pausing to admire the blossoms. Their season is brief, so I’m savoring each day they last.

All the trees in the backyard are beginning to leaf out and spring surrounds us now. I’m already looking forward to the lilacs opening—their scent is one of my favorite parts of this time of year. Soon I’ll cut a large bouquet to brighten the counter and fill the kitchen with fragrance.

Yesterday the sun came out, and it felt wonderful to soak up some warmth. We all needed that little boost of vitamin D, and the plants seemed to enjoy it as much as we did. I’m hoping for a few more sunny days so everything can keep filling in and thriving.

I discovered that my large new kitchen sink is perfect for watering houseplants. I can bring the smaller pots inside, set them in the sink for a soak, let them drain, and then return them to the counter. Afterward I use the sprayer to rinse away any soil and give the sink a quick polish so it’s shiny again. It’s a small pleasure—part of the gentle, domestic rhythm I enjoy while puttering in the kitchen.

Speaking of plants and sunshine, I picked up a few potted herbs this weekend for the kitchen. Today I’ll repot them and arrange them on the counter—fresh herbs at arm’s reach will be so convenient. I’m also planting some herbs in pots for the patio so we’ll have quick access to them when cooking outdoors.

As I carried the new plants into the kitchen, Jack sat by the door with that sweet, expectant look that always makes me smile. Puttering, pups, pink blooms, and plants—those are my simple joys this week. Enjoying them feels like a gentle celebration of ordinary life.
