I received a few messages this week asking how to decorate in January — that awkward “in-between” time after the holidays and before spring arrives. Once the tree and ornaments are tucked away, a home can feel a little bare or chilly.
If your rooms feel emptier than you’d like in January, consider rearranging a few pieces or adding subtle touches to make spaces feel warmer and more lived-in. Spring will be here eventually, but in the meantime you can make your home comfortable and inviting.
On Monday I’ll share some small updates I’ve made in my own house. I don’t overhaul my decor every season; most of my changes are subtle. Still, small shifts — a new throw, a different arrangement, an extra pillow — can make a room feel refreshed. After Christmas I often add a few softer, more tactile elements to warm things up, or simply move things around to get that cozy feeling back.
I continue to layer cozy, organic textures in soft, neutral colors. I start layering in the fall and keep building through winter. The same goes for clothes: another sweater, warmer socks. Those habits make the season feel more intentional and comforting.
I tend to favor neutrals and texture because they feel the softest and coziest in this house, though every home is different. I generally avoid palettes that feel too moody or too ethereal at this time of year. I don’t follow color trends closely unless a tone truly speaks to me.
That said, I understand why others add more color in January — the landscape outside can feel stark, and color helps counter that. Lately I’m drawn to deeper greens or teal accents to give a neutral room a bit more presence. Navy also works well year-round for me, but in winter it feels best paired with layered neutrals and cozy fabrics.
Experiment with different options and trust what feels right in your home. Sometimes the simplest tweaks—an extra throw, a swap of pillows, a small grouping of objects—are enough to change the mood.
I think the collage above captures the kind of January mood I like: layered, textured, soft, and quietly sophisticated.
Come back Monday to see what’s new at our house!
