I have always loved opening my home for holiday gatherings. When we lived in our 4,700-square-foot house in Portland, we hosted parties for more than 100 people, with serving tables arranged in several rooms and seating set up everywhere. In smaller homes, we simply made the space cozy and close — and it worked. What matters most isn’t the size or layout of your space, but the warmth you share when you open your door.
Do you ever wish you were the kind of person who felt confident hosting small holiday get-togethers?
I don’t always feel that way, but I try to make the effort anyway. Once I commit, it’s almost always enjoyable. Making the choice to invite people over is the first and most important step.

Do insecurities or the fear of imperfection ever stop you from inviting people into your home?
Sometimes I fall out of the habit of hosting. I get busy, tired, or distracted, and find plenty of reasons not to invite people over. Still, when I push past those fears and open my home, I’m always glad I did.
This season, try to worry less about mistakes, imperfections, or what others might think. Even a small gathering of friends or neighbors can be meaningful. The more you do it, the easier it becomes to say yes next time.

Tomorrow I’ll share a favorite hosting tip and a few practical suggestions to help you feel prepared for holiday events in your home.
