Inspired By: When to Change and When to Stay Consistent

When I was going through my past Christmas tour posts to gather inspiration for a recent roundup, I realized I had omitted one of my earlier tours from 2013. It felt right to bring it back as a little five-year flashback and revisit those familiar holiday moments.

Looking back at older tours is always a small pleasure. Even though we live in a different house now, many of the same ideas and details return season after season. That continuity feels comforting and reminds me that, while I enjoy change, I also appreciate consistency in the rooms I create.

In the world of blogs and social media, dramatic changes often grab attention, and I enjoy evolving my style. Still, I find I’m drawn to a steady aesthetic—simple, calm, and grounded. Over the years I’ve kept similar furnishings and repeated decorating choices: neutral bases, natural textures, and classic holiday elements. For Christmas that means garlands, greenery, wreaths, and warm twinkle lights. These familiar touches always make a space feel like home to me.

My preference for continuity doesn’t mean everything stays exactly the same. I still enjoy small updates, layering in new accents or swapping a few pieces to reflect how we live now. But the overall look—the calm palette, the natural greens, the cozy lighting—remains a throughline that connects past homes to the present.

If you’d like to see how my decorations evolved, last year’s simple Christmas house tour shows how I carry those familiar elements into a different space while keeping things relaxed and welcoming.

Do you tend to be inspired by change or by consistency when decorating your home?

Some people refresh their holiday decor every year, while others rely on timeless classics that feel right from year to year. I fall somewhere in between: small updates and new accents layered onto a consistent foundation.

Also, if you missed my post about preserving family memories and the current discount, that post includes details about a special offer that can make a thoughtful gift this season.

I’m honored that my book appears in store displays during the holidays. If you spot it at a local shop, I’d love to see a photo—you can tag me on social media to share what you find.
