Layering Bedding – BHG

Now and then I let myself dream a little about a future bedroom makeover. I haven’t refreshed my bedroom in this house — not even a new coat of paint. Life and other projects (like finishing my office) kept taking priority, but lately I’ve been picturing the space more often.

Honestly, even if it feels like a dream, my bedroom is a room I need to tackle soon — for my own sanity. Bedrooms matter: they’re where we unwind and recharge. A bedroom should feel like a retreat, not a place you want to escape from.

The truth is I don’t like my room right now. The carpet, worn from years with dogs and puppies, is the biggest issue — I’m ready to remove it and start over. It’s a project that can’t wait much longer.

Aside from replacing the carpet, I’m excited about new bedding. That’s more of a “want” than an emergency — I’ve used the same set for about 12 years. It’s surprising how quickly time passes.

Thankfully I invested in a classic white matelassé coverlet years ago. Its timeless look and good quality mean it still works, but after more than a decade I’m ready for a fresh style. I figure after twelve years a makeover is reasonable.

If the budget allows, I’ll update the bedroom once the flooring is replaced. Projects here often feel like dominoes — one thing must be done before the next can begin.

While I wait to start, thinking about the design helps me clarify what I want and prevents rushed decisions. One look I keep returning to is the layered bed. Mixing patterns and textures gives a bed personality and an informal, welcoming feel. It keeps the space from appearing too stiff — which suits my style perfectly.

I recently admired a layered bedding display at West Elm. It reminded me how much I love layered looks and sparked my desire for new linens. Shopping can be dangerous for a saver like me — inspiration leads quickly to plans.

So how about you? Is your bedroom just the way you want it?

If time and money were no object, what would you change?
