How to Hang Plates, Platters, and Bowls on the Wall (Video)

How to hang plates, platters and bowls on a wall // The Inspired Room blog

I enjoy displaying interesting objects on my walls, especially favorite plates, platters and bowls. I’ve even hung my Polish pottery quiche plates in the dining room. A common question I get is: how do you actually hang plates on a wall? I’ve answered this in The Inspired Room and in my book, but showing the process makes it easier to follow, so my daughter Courtney and I made a short video demonstration below.

I prefer to hang plates, platters and bowls with adhesive plate hangers or with non-adhesive plate hangers when appropriate.

Adhesive plate hangers are an easy, low-profile option for many decorative plates. They attach directly to the back of the plate, hold the piece securely, and keep hardware out of sight. For heavier or antique pieces, I recommend using non-adhesive hangers or traditional plate hangers that crimp the rim and provide firmer support. Always check the weight rating of the hanger and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

When arranging a collection, start by planning the layout on the floor or using paper templates on the wall. Group plates by color, pattern or size to create balance. Use a level and measure consistently so spacing remains even. For a casual look, vary spacing and mix in other objects like framed prints or small shelves.

If you’re hanging plates in a room with varying humidity or temperature, avoid adhesive hangers on fragile or valuable antiques—opt instead for hangers that secure without glue. For glazed pottery, make sure any contact points are padded or rubberized to prevent scratching. If you’re unsure, test a single plate in a low-risk spot before committing to an entire arrangement.

To maintain your display, dust plates gently and periodically check hanger tightness. If a plate seems loose, remove it and inspect both the hanger and the wall anchor. Properly installed hangers make wall-mounted plates durable and safe for years of enjoyment.

I share lots of ideas for decorating, homemaking and organizing in my books. If you enjoy simple, budget-friendly ways to make a room feel more intentional, try starting with a few special plates or objects you already own. Arranging them thoughtfully on a wall can make a big impact without a big investment.
