I I love having a morning routine. I’m not naturally the most organized or regimented person, but a few simple habits keep my house “clean enough” and help me navigate a busy life without feeling overwhelmed. These small routines have become steady anchors for me over the years.
Some people thrive on intricate, color-coded schedules, but I do best with short, flexible routines. If a system feels too complicated or time-consuming, I quickly lose interest. Over the years I’ve tried many methods and kept only what actually fit my life. My basic daily routines have stuck with me for more than a decade because they are realistic and forgiving.

I’ll confess: I’m more motivated to deep-clean when I’m preparing for a gathering than when a chore chart tells me to do it on a specific day. I may not feel like scrubbing a toilet on Tuesday, but I do want the toilets to be clean. When I notice they need attention, I clean them right then—quick and thorough. A few minutes now keeps small tasks from becoming big problems, and that’s the heart of my approach.
I juggle a lot—running a business, responsibilities at church, family life—so I don’t want housekeeping to take over my day. Still, I love a tidy home and aim to keep our space clean enough. My morning routine helps me stay focused and maintain momentum without spending all morning on chores.

Why is a morning routine so important?
My routine gives me a sense of order and sets a positive tone for the day. By handling small tasks daily, nothing piles up and everything feels more manageable. Equally important is enjoyment—if the routine is pleasant, it supports my emotional health and productivity. I treat the routine as something I look forward to rather than a list of dreaded chores. Simple pleasures like the ritual of making a cup of coffee make a big difference.

How much time does a morning routine require?
A practical morning routine can take as little as 10–30 minutes or extend to an hour or two, depending on your schedule. Choose a length that fits your day and adjust as needed. Even a very short routine—getting dressed, brushing your teeth, wiping the sink—can positively shape your morning.

Build your morning routine from three types of tasks:
1. Essential daily tasks that help you feel ready and energized (brush your teeth, make the bed, shower, get dressed, have coffee, unload the dishwasher, or enjoy quiet time).
2. Quick catch-up tasks you can do when needed or when time allows (start a load of laundry, sweep the floor, wipe a counter).
3. One or two enjoyable activities you look forward to (coffee, music, journaling, reading, a short walk, or prayer).
Aim to stick with your routine as much as possible, even if you sometimes skip a step. Habits take time to form—give it a few weeks and the routine will begin to feel natural and restorative.

My basic morning routine
– Brush my teeth and wipe out the sink.
– Make the bed to discourage crawling back in and to start the day with order.
– Open the blinds for natural light; it helps me feel energized.
– Turn off porch lights (I turn them on again in the evening as part of my night routine).
– Make a cup of coffee—small rituals like this add pleasure to the morning.
– Spend a bit of quiet time, often before or after the bed is made.
– Unload the dishwasher, place breakfast dishes in it, and clean the sink; a clean sink encourages clean habits all day.
– Shower (it’s often my thinking time), start a load of laundry and set a timer to move it to the dryer, apply light makeup and dry my hair so I feel put together, and get dressed—shoes on because I’m more productive that way.
– Move laundry to the dryer and plan to remove and fold it promptly so ironing is rarely necessary.
– Turn on the computer and begin the workday—work I enjoy and that supports our family.
