Shopping for new pieces online or in stores is fun—especially when you’re thinking about fall decorating or making your home cozier for winter. But rearranging what you already own can be just as rewarding, and often more satisfying. Do you agree?
If you’re new to decorating, welcome. I’ll share my favorite decorating tip: a straightforward strategy that helps you create a cohesive, long-lasting look without constantly buying new items. I’ll also explain why I moved my blue glass lamp into this room.
Experienced decorators will recognize this approach immediately. If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ve seen me use this technique again and again through room makeovers across seasons and homes. It works, and it’s enjoyable.

When starting out, you might wonder if you need to buy new items constantly to love your home. You may notice some rooms look unique and collected while others feel similar to what you see elsewhere. It can seem like staying on trend requires constant purchases or that only people with big budgets can achieve an interesting, layered style.
Yes, some people do spend a lot on new furniture and seasonal decor. That’s one route. But collecting pieces you love over time is a different path—one that saves money and builds a more personal, timeless aesthetic. This approach lets you refresh a room each season without breaking the bank.

My favorite decorating tip is to collect pieces you love over time. When you build a collection gradually, you can often update a space without buying anything new because you already own items that work. Choosing classic, well-made pieces to begin with helps your style remain relevant. You get the joy of “shopping” your own home and frequently discover the perfect object to complete a vignette or seasonal display.
If you do find something special to add, that’s great too. Every new piece you bring into your collection can refresh the look and help you pull a room together quickly. Over time, those additions contribute to a unique style that reflects your tastes.
This is exactly how I’ve decorated in each home we’ve lived in. Sometimes I buy an accessory, rug, or piece of furniture if it feels right and the budget allows. Often, though, I enjoy rearranging and mixing what I already have until a room feels balanced and complete.
Occasionally I find something that doesn’t work in a new space, and that’s fine—moving it elsewhere or swapping it out is part of the process. Decorating often involves trial and error until everything feels right.

In this room I moved my blue glass lamp from the upstairs office. I loved it there, but the corner needed a round lamp that made a statement without blocking window light. For a week or two I tried a Tiffany-style lamp we’ve owned for decades, which we adore and which suits another corner better. After experimenting, the blue glass lamp proved to be the right choice here.
The lamp fills the space with presence but remains visually light, letting natural light and color flow through its glass. I miss it upstairs, but this placement serves the room best. I originally bought the lamp on sale a few years ago because it felt like “me,” and it pairs nicely with a blue rug I purchased around the same time. Together they create a coordinated, collected feel.
Buying thoughtfully over time expands your decorating options. Pairing items you’ve collected—along with any new additions—creates a distinctive personal style that evolves naturally.
