Guest Room Makeover

Today I’m excited to share a cheerful summer makeover for our guest room. For me, a successful room update is about more than aesthetics — it’s about how the space feels. That means prioritizing comfort and considering the small details that make a room welcoming and relaxing for visitors.

My aim was to create a room that’s beautiful to look at and comfortable to spend time in. Bedrooms deserve special attention since we spend so much time in them; investing in comfort makes a real difference for guests and hosts alike.

Quality Counts

You may recall I’ve mentioned our need for a new mattress while planning updates for our master bedroom. We had an exceptional Stearns & Foster mattress that lasted more than 15 years and moved with us through multiple houses. While you wouldn’t normally keep a mattress that long, we appreciated the lasting quality and comfort it provided.

Stearns & Foster Matress Room Makeover

Recently Stearns & Foster contacted me about collaborating on a small guest room refresh and trying one of their new mattresses. Although we’re not ready to replace the mattress in our master bedroom yet, the guest room was the perfect place to test and refresh. I prefer to choose quality pieces that endure, and a handcrafted Stearns & Foster mattress offers durable comfort that elevates any bedroom, even a compact one.

Summer Guest Cottage by the Sea

When we moved in two years ago, the guest room was a tiny blank slate (see the before photo above). A fresh coat of paint and a simple guest bed were our first steps, but I wanted to add a seasonal, coastal-inspired update for summer.

We had recently repurposed the guest room curtains for another space, leaving an empty rod and an opportunity for a new look. I also planned to swap the basic builder light fixture for something with more personality. Small changes like these can transform a room’s character.

My concept for this makeover was a summer guest cottage by the sea — a cozy retreat you’d want to escape to for a weekend. We live in Seattle with a view of Puget Sound, so a subtle coastal feel inside the house echoes the landscape outside and suits the relaxed mood I wanted for the room.

Coastal Cottage Guest Room Makeover Design Elements

We assembled an inspiration board with the design elements we envisioned. The final result blends style, comfort, and personality to create the feel of a coastal cottage even in a small footprint. I’m thrilled with how the space turned out and can’t wait to share the full “after” photos soon.

Stay tuned — the newly refreshed summer guest room will be revealed on the blog next week.
