Good Housekeeping
In autumn I find myself craving the coziest elements of home decor. Bright white walls work beautifully in summer, reflecting light and feeling fresh, but when the days grow shorter a space needs texture and warmth to feel inviting. Grasscloth wallpaper is an ideal way to add that warm, tactile layer to a room.
When I moved into my “castle,” a 1930s English Tudor in Portland, the bedroom featured grasscloth. I loved the look, but years of smoke damage meant it had to come down. Even so, that experience left me fascinated with grasscloth and eager to use it again in a room where it feels right.
Many people fear wallpaper because older papers were notoriously difficult to remove. I’ve stripped my share of wallpaper and it isn’t a task I enjoy — it’s messy and time-consuming. Fortunately, modern wallcoverings and adhesives are easier to work with, and removability has improved. That doesn’t eliminate the effort entirely, but it does make the idea of installing grasscloth less daunting.
I’m still learning what this house wants, but I can already tell it would welcome grasscloth. The question becomes where to place it so it enhances the room’s character and comfort.
Here are some ideas and inspiring rooms to help you decide. Enjoy.
