Fourth of July Weekend: Juggling a Flood of Projects and Plans

Porch in progress

At my house, when it rains it pours.

And I’m not talking only about the July rain (though living in Seattle, we certainly have our share). I mean the kind of downpour that comes when multiple home projects all kick into motion at once.

Recently I felt overwhelmed by my growing to-do list—the kind you dread rather than enjoy—so I gave myself a mini break and dove into a few fun house projects. For me, tackling a project is almost like a spa day: it lifts my mood and restores order. When I get into that mindset, projects multiply quickly and I tend to work on several things at once.

I’ve made noticeable progress on the porch: I brought in some new plants, finally hung the curtains I’ve had for a year, and added a few accessories. I also returned to a cabinet I started ages ago during another burst of inspiration, and I began working on a mirror that’s been on my list for about ten years. I know, I move slowly, but I enjoy juggling a few projects simultaneously—call it decorating ADD. Even if each project advances a little at a time, seeing steady progress in many areas makes me happy.

This early photo shows the first swipes of paint on the mirror. I chose a soft gray-taupe neutral as the initial layer, and I’m pleased with it so far. The plan is to add a few more coats and then sand and distress it slightly. It’s crazy to think I waited a decade to repaint a piece that had a very dark brown stain that always bothered me. Better late than never!

More progress on the cabinet!

I’ll share detailed updates on each project soon—sorry for the teasers! In the meantime, I’ve been collecting inspiration from blog friends on my Inspiring Finds Tumblr. There are lots of cute Fourth of July projects, recipes, and neat decorating ideas, including an incredible chicken coop that’s so beautifully designed I joked I’d move in myself.

Also, don’t forget to check out the link-ups from yesterday’s Inspired By post—so many creative entries to explore and borrow ideas from.

And now for a quick announcement: the winner of the Lacefield Designs pillow giveaway from OBX Trading Group has been chosen. Drumroll please…
