February Home Styling: Leather, Copper & Wood Accents

Leather Sofa - Living Room Textures - The Inspired Room

February is a perfect month for a little house fluffing. I find myself wanting to pause the busyness, tidy the kitchen, rearrange pillows, dust surfaces and polish whatever needs attention. In cooler months I especially enjoy cozying things up—adding layers and texture makes the house feel warmer and more inviting.

Spring decorating will come soon, but for now a good clean and some simple updates keep me content.

I’ve been inspired by a book I recently read; the story and the homes inside are full of character, even if the exact style isn’t mine. I love seeing interesting layers and thoughtful collections—it feels intentional and meaningful. Perfectly staged minimalism doesn’t give me the same warm feeling as a home that shows personality through curated pieces and traveled treasures.

Having lived in older homes my whole life, I’m drawn to a relaxed, collected aesthetic that blends history with comfort. My ideal style changes over time, and that’s part of the fun—homes should evolve with you. Mixing old and new pieces creates a layered look that feels lived-in and personal.

My new leather sofa has finally arrived and I love it. I adore texture, so seeing the room come together layer by layer has been satisfying. Warm copper and wood tones—seen in copper pots, bamboo blinds, cutting boards, the leather sofa and warm wood floors—play beautifully against glossy white subway tile and white quartz counters. That balance of warm, tactile elements with clean, smooth surfaces makes the space feel harmonious.

After an incident last fall that ruined my white slipcovers, I decided to move away from so much white—at least for the moment—and introduce a warmer, more tactile sofa in the family room. Leather feels classic and durable, and I’ve been craving richer textures and deeper colors to complement the soft neutrals already throughout the house. I’ve also refreshed my office with a deeper, richer navy, which adds another layer of contrast and interest.

My previous leather sofa was too large for our narrow family room, so this time I chose a smaller scale: a six-foot loveseat with slightly rolled arms. It fits the space well and leaves room to walk around both sides as it faces the fireplace. I also appreciate the nailhead trim—it’s a classic detail that bridges traditional and modern styles nicely.

Recently my parents offered a Persian rug they had stored away, and I decided to bring it in for the winter. Its palette of coral, light blue and navy works throughout the year, and adding the rug felt like an easy, effective way to refresh the room. I enjoy experimenting—small changes to rugs, furniture or accessories can transform a space without a major overhaul.

Pairing the old rug with the new leather loveseat and a tufted velvet ottoman created cozy, layered depth in the family room. Mixing textures—wool, leather, velvet, wood and metal—adds warmth and visual interest while keeping the overall look cohesive.
