Farewell Home: Moving On After Years in One House

WTwo weeks ago we officially said goodbye to our Seattle home after six wonderful years. That house served us well — it was a gathering place for family, a refuge in both hard and happy times, and a backdrop for many unexpected blessings as we prepared for the next chapter of our lives.

We asked ourselves repeatedly while planning this next season, “Do we really want to leave another home we love?” Truthfully, we didn’t. I’ve always hoped for a forever home, and even when previous houses turned out to be seasons rather than forever places, I treated each one as if it were the one. We loved this house deeply.

As we looked ahead, though, it became clear that closing this chapter was the right move. The decision brought peace and opened doors toward other dreams. Knowing what awaited made stepping forward easier, even while we felt the weight of saying goodbye.

Our peace about moving doesn’t mean we won’t miss the house. We will. It holds a meaningful place in our story, so this goodbye doesn’t feel final. Every home we’ve lived in has taught us lessons and given memories we carry forward; this one is no different.

Although we won’t be returning, we can still enjoy the home through photos — it will be featured in my upcoming coffee-table style photo book. I’m excited to share more about that project in the coming months.

If you’ve followed our journey, you’ll remember when we first moved in and the many projects we completed over the years. The house didn’t begin as the picture you see now — it wasn’t the exact dream home we imagined nor the house we expected to buy — but it proved to be a sturdy, welcoming home in the neighborhood and season we needed.

The house turned out to be an unexpected gift. The previous owner told me after our purchase that we would love living here — a comment I didn’t fully understand at the time, but she was right. Our home felt happy and inviting, not just because of the renovations and updates we made, but because it truly felt good to be there.

We took a few photos and videos during our final walk-through before packing up. There are many more images to share, including rooms we updated that haven’t appeared on the blog yet (yes — you’ll finally see the changes we made in our mint and pink bathroom). We’ll share more photos and details down the road, so this won’t be the last you see of the house.

Several readers asked to see the house staged for sale, so we may show that process in a future post. We didn’t hire professional stagers; we simply removed excess items, took down family photos, and packed away personal mementos. The house remained cozy and lived-in, but with enough visual space for buyers to imagine their own lives there.

We received six wonderful offers and closed the sale to the new owners a few weeks ago. Every prayer and concern about selling and finding a new home was met with answers and unexpected clarity. While we are sad to leave, we trust this home was meant for our family during that season, just as we trust our new cottage by the sea is right for this chapter.

We’re forever grateful for the ways this house shaped our lives. It changed us and gave us countless memories. Now we’re excited to begin a new chapter in a small cottage by the sea — another unexpected and beautiful gift.

For now, we say goodbye, but this home will remain part of our story, our blog, and our family forever.
