Please welcome my friend Kimba of A Soft Place to Land. I was fortunate to meet her at Blissdom—she is every bit as warm and genuine in person as she is on her blog. Enjoy her practical tips for easy entertaining!
Do you love to entertain at home, or does hosting make you anxious as you try to pull everything together for the perfect gathering? Maybe you’re somewhere in between, like I am. I love the idea of opening my home to family and friends, but sometimes I hesitate because it feels like too much work or I don’t have the time.
There was a season when every event left me frazzled. I convinced myself everything needed to be spotless, and I prepared complicated (and expensive) dishes that added stress instead of joy. Over time I learned that sharing our homes and hospitality is far more valuable than chasing perfection. Below are practical ideas that make entertaining easier and more enjoyable.
Relax
Your guests aren’t coming to judge your housekeeping—they’re coming to see you. Do a quick tidy of the big stuff (and yes, hiding a pile in the dryer works in a pinch) and move on. Most people won’t notice stray toys or craft supplies on the table, and if they do, it might even make them feel more at ease. Focus on the company, not perfection.
Commit Yourself
Commit to a time and place that works for your family. Put the gathering on your calendar so it becomes real. Invite neighbors you’d like to know better or reconnect with friends you rarely see. A simple scheduled plan makes hosting less intimidating and more likely to happen.
Be Spontaneous
Some of my favorite get-togethers have been impromptu. Realize on a Friday afternoon that nothing is planned? Call a few friends for an easy movie night with popcorn and ice cream. Invite them to bring kids in pajamas and scatter pillows on the floor for a relaxed, fun evening.
Try Something Different
Here are a few low-stress ideas that keep entertaining simple and enjoyable without breaking the bank.

Dessert only – Not every gathering needs a full meal. Invite neighbors over for dessert and coffee, or a casual wine-and-dessert night. Store-bought cheesecake or a Costco dessert is perfectly fine—no need for elaborate baking. An ice cream bar with sauces and toppings is another crowd-pleaser that keeps prep and cleanup minimal.
Keep it simple – A reliable approach is to pair a big salad with ordered pizza and a special dessert. It feels like a full meal without the stress of complicated cooking. For dessert, try a chocolate fondue with fruit, cookies and pretzels, or build a s’mores night around a fire. Kids love it, and it’s low-effort for the host.
Let them help – Inviting guests to contribute is practical and communal. Potlucks are a great example: the host supplies a main dish while guests bring sides. In summer, a hot-dog bar is an easy, budget-friendly option—provide quality hot dogs and buns, and let guests choose from chili, cheese, sauerkraut and other toppings. It’s simple, fun, and everyone gets involved.
Inviting people into your home creates connection. When you open your door, you give yourself and your guests a chance to build relationships, share laughter, and make memories—often without elaborate preparations.
