Detox Your Home: Daily Routines for Cleaner Living and Thyroid Update

Daily self-care matters. If you’re joining this mini-series now, begin with the intro on home and body self-care, then read about creating a spa bathroom and my detox bath recipe. Today I’m focusing on detoxing daily routines. One of the simplest ways to care for yourself and your family is to remove what no longer serves you.

Learning to care for my home and body has been a 30-year journey. Detoxing my home and making healthier choices has been worth the effort — I feel better than ever. I consider myself healthy, but I live with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune condition, and Epstein-Barr virus. Staying well is an ongoing effort. I’ve been promising to share more about this, so here’s a thyroid update and what I’ve learned about detoxing daily life.

What we bring into our home affects our health more than we often realize. Many choices I made years ago still influence my well-being today. I didn’t know then that everyday decisions would impact a condition I’d later face.

Once damage to your body is done, reversing it becomes harder — but not always impossible. That’s why detoxing our homes and daily habits should be a self-care priority, whether you currently have a diagnosed health issue or not.

Health is worth guarding; toxins should be discarded. I’m thankful each day that I generally feel well and have a strong immune system. There were seasons when I couldn’t do what I wanted, years when I felt unwell without understanding why. Those experiences taught me not to take good health for granted.

Good health is never guaranteed. Bodies can fail us, and sometimes all we can do is our best. We should avoid adding anxiety by striving for impossible perfection. Instead, make steady, healthy changes that accumulate over time.

Detoxing the home and daily habits improves our chances of health and happiness. Removing unnecessary toxins from our environment supports both physical and emotional well-being.

Although I’ve always leaned toward natural remedies and healthier choices — never smoking, avoiding drugs and limiting alcohol — I learned the hard way that everyday products and ingredients can still cause harm. Labels like “natural” or “organic” don’t guarantee safety for every individual.

We all have habits that may not be ideal. What I didn’t realize years ago was how common household and personal care products, or certain foods, could trigger unexpected symptoms.

I discovered that some everyday items can be surprisingly damaging. Even foods considered healthy can affect certain people; for example, my son once had severe emotional reactions to casein in common foods like whole grain bread or seemingly toddler-friendly snacks.

I’ve learned to research and be more intentional about what I bring into our home.

Certain foods and hidden ingredients caused symptoms I wouldn’t have linked to diet or products without careful observation. Over the years I connected symptoms, consulted practitioners, and learned to identify triggers.

Home and body are deeply connected; choices in one affect the other. In my book Dwelling I share my health journey and practical tips for caring for both home and body. I’m not a doctor, but I’ve learned from experience, tests, and conversations with medical professionals. Observing symptoms and piecing together causes has been central to improving our family’s health.

While my health history may differ from yours, I believe sharing experiences helps us all do better. I’m passionate about helping others create healthier homes. Caring for ourselves and our spaces goes beyond decor — it’s about daily practices that support well-being.

Adopt a “know better, do better” approach to health. I don’t dwell on past choices or expect perfection. Instead I take steady, practical steps forward. Small consistent habits make the biggest difference over time.

Become your own health advocate. No one knows your body better than you do. Stay informed, listen to symptoms, and make decisions that prioritize your family’s well-being. I’ve learned this lesson repeatedly.

My Thyroid Update

Stay proactive even when you feel great. Over the past year I felt well and let some self-care slip. I skipped routine bloodwork and paused my naturopath’s guidance while she was on maternity leave. I also ran out of a natural thyroid supplement and didn’t replace it promptly. Those small choices added up: my TSH spiked dramatically and other levels were off.

Healthy habits add up; a single choice can create a domino effect.

That brief lapse led to a short season of symptoms. I’m recovering now and my numbers are improving daily. I credit the overall healthy choices I’ve made over the years for helping me bounce back more quickly.

I feel quite well today despite the temporary setback. I’ve recommitted to regular bloodwork, consistent supplements, and mindful daily routines. I continue to detox our home by choosing non-toxic household and personal care products, plan to do food sensitivity testing, and remain mostly gluten- and dairy-free because my body responds better this way. I take weekly detox baths and use natural supplements and oils to support thyroid, gut, immune, and emotional health.

Daily choices about how we live at home matter. I haven’t been seriously ill in over four years, which shows those choices make a difference. We prioritize wellness and keep toxins out of our home. I’m grateful to have moved past panic attacks and other debilitating symptoms that once plagued me.

I continue to give myself grace while learning to do better each day.
