YYou know how I’m always dreaming of Christmas decorating throughout the house and creating a few themed trees? I’ve shared projects like last year’s jewelry tree and the quirky silver spoon tree from years past. This year, despite the dust and construction chaos, I’m determined to get our Christmas groove on and make those ideas happen again.
We were extra excited when Michaels sent us a pre-lit tree, a Michaels gift card, and invited us to take part in their Holiday Dream Tree Challenge. How could we say no? It was the perfect nudge to ignore the mess and start decorating, and it gave me the excuse for a fun night out with my two favorite girls.
We turned it into a girls’ night at Michaels Craft. We had a blast shopping and planning our themed tree. The three of us wandered the aisles, imagining all the possibilities: a glam tree, a crafty tree, or even a tree inspired by craft tools. We pushed three carts around the store, brainstorming and picking up supplies for little homemade ornaments and accents.

One great find was scented sticks made for artificial trees. They smell wonderful and add that real-tree fragrance to a faux tree. We still love cutting down a real tree for our main Christmas display, but for themed artificial trees, those scent sticks are a lovely touch—far better than the typical car air freshener smell I feared.
As we shopped, we kept imagining crafts and small projects to personalize the tree. However, we also realized our time was limited and our crafting skills are modest at best. After a couple of hours of deliberation, we finally chose a theme that felt perfect for us. It was so “us” that we laughed picturing how adorable the finished tree would be and how much it would brighten our days throughout the season. We even knew Jack would enjoy it.

I’m learning that you don’t need perfect conditions to enjoy the life you want—you just have to do it. Who waits to decorate a Christmas tree until a remodel is finished and the dust is gone? We don’t. We set up the tree and started decorating right in the middle of the chaos, and of course Jack helped—well, as much as he could. More on his “help” later.
