I wanted to share a progress update on our Christmas porch. The recent rainy weather has made things a bit gray, but I managed to take some photos of how the porch is shaping up.
Although our house has a single front porch, it almost feels like two distinct spaces—one at the main entry and another by the living room doors. In this post I’ll show both sides and how they’re decorated for the season.
Last year my little metal whale that usually adorns the wreath went missing, so it wasn’t on the door for the holidays. I missed it—and so did visitors who asked about it—so I’m happy to say it’s back this year, right where it belongs.
He’s greeting everyone who comes by, perched in the center of the wreath and bringing a bit of personality to the porch.
I added a Christmas banner, string lights, and hanging stars to create a festive feel. Banners above the door have become a favorite seasonal tradition: they’re charming, straightforward to hang, easy to store in a small home, and they instantly signal celebration for a new season or holiday.
We’ve used banners for Thanksgiving and Halloween and will likely add ones for spring and summer. They’re simple to bring out for special occasions without having to commit to keeping them up year-round.
I recently bought a new weatherproof doormat that I love. It’s durable and suits the porch well. These mats come in several styles and are made by a small family business; the material holds up to the elements and stores easily between seasons.
Finnegan is always eager to greet guests and loves reaching out for a shake—he’s part of the porch welcome team.
Lily sends her hello, too. Their friendly faces make the porch feel even more inviting.
After hanging the wreath, I had the idea to tuck the ribbon behind the whale so he stands out even more. I like the bow both visible and tucked, and you’ll see both looks in the photos. For now I’m leaning toward keeping the ribbon tucked behind him so the whale becomes the focal point.
Decorating often takes a few tries to feel right. I enjoy taking my time—adjusting and refining as I go until the display feels complete.
