“My house is my sanctuary. I know you feel the same way about yours. A home isn’t meant to be a showplace for the world; it should first and foremost nurture your family.”

We’ve been busy around the house this week, and it feels good to focus more on home. When deadlines pile up—like during the long stretches I’ve had while working on books—it can be hard to find time and creative energy for everything you want to do. Lately, though, a lighter schedule has given me a chance to pause, imagine, and act.

This quieter season has allowed me to enjoy caring for my home without rushing. I’m getting organized and finally have the creative headspace I’ve been craving. That space has me dreaming up lots of ideas for the near future while also tackling projects we can do right now. Both dreaming and doing matter; balancing them is the fun part.

Are you more of a dreamer or a doer? I tend to be a dreamer, with more creative ideas than I can ever complete. That abundance of options can make decisions difficult. When you like every idea, choosing one feels tricky. I try not to let pressure rush me. I take time to think through what will work best for our family and move forward when the choice feels right.

I don’t do projects just for the sake of change. I’m intentional with the choices I make. I’ve never felt compelled to constantly reinvent our home to keep up appearances. I don’t decorate for others—though I truly enjoy sharing the journey with people who follow along. It’s a joy to exchange ideas with kindred spirits.

Your home should be a sanctuary. It should be a safe, welcoming place that supports your family’s life. Take your time making it what you want it to be. When you invite others in, you share a personal, meaningful space—one that reflects what makes you feel at home. Creating that atmosphere for your family is one of the most rewarding things you can do.
