Creating a Personal Space: How to Design Your Own Sanctuary

home office: a space of my own

About a year ago I realized something important was missing in my life: a creative space of my own. I didn’t just want a functional office; I wanted a room that would lift my spirits and spark new ideas.

I needed a quiet spot away from the usual household bustle where I could be surrounded by things that inspire me. A place to think, create and simply be. A room where my daughters and I could close the door, laugh loudly, listen to girly music, light a favorite candle, and dare to dream a little bigger. A space where we could enjoy ice cream without having to share with the boys in the house.

We wanted a real little getaway for the girls right inside our home. We love our kitchen, but we needed a change of scene.

So last year I turned my tiny, boring office — which had been used more like a storage room — into a bright, colorful space that encourages creative dreaming. It’s still my office, but it’s become so much more.

I love it.

It’s not extravagant. It’s small. It’s not perfect.

But it’s mine (and my girls’), and that makes all the difference.

And I have a bit of happy news: I finally found my yellow chair.

It felt like it was calling my name, and I found it at World Market — it insisted on coming home with me.

I’m still smitten with the ‘cute as a button’ chairs tucked into corners of the room, perfect for late-night conversations or curling up with a stack of magazines.

I adore the Anthropologie-style curtains that frame the large window where I sit and daydream each day.

The lively mix of colors and patterns brings this space to life and lifts my mood every time I walk in.

In this room I am surrounded by items I love—objects that inspire me and push me to try new things. Color, pattern, and happy memories rejuvenate me and make work feel like play.

I smile at small reminders scattered around the room, each holding a memory or a laugh. Little treasures make the space feel personal and comforting.

I especially love spotting the chandelier and the yellow chair down the hall from the kitchen—those glimpses remind me that my little escape is always close by.

I firmly believe everyone deserves a special place of their own: a corner, a small office, or a creative nook where they can dream, recharge, and be themselves.

Do you have a special space of your own?
