A master bedroom should feel like a retreat — a place to unwind and recharge. When we first moved into our home, the master didn’t feel restful at all. After a few thoughtful updates it is now a calm, inviting sanctuary we love spending time in.

Below are practical tips we used to transform a basic bedroom into a cozy haven. Many of the finishing touches came from a recent trip to World Market, where we found textured pillows, a pom-pom quilt and other pieces that helped pull the look together.

Create a Cozy Color Scheme

A neutral palette sets the stage for a soothing bedroom. Choose warm neutrals and deeper accent tones to keep the room calm while adding depth.

In our room, a dark matte gray-plum wall creates drama without overpowering the space, helping it feel both intimate and restful.

Play Up the Details

Small design details make a big difference. Layer different textures on your bed—quilts, throws and a mix of pillows—to create a lived-in, luxurious feel. We added a pom-pom quilt alongside macrame and velvet pillows for visual interest and comfort.

Design a Relaxing Mood

Think about the senses when setting the mood. Soft lighting, natural materials and subtle scent can all contribute to calm. Battery-operated candles provide a warm glow without the worry of open flame, and rattan accents add texture and warmth.

Treat Yourself Like a Guest

Design your bedroom with the same care you’d give to a guest room. Keep bedding fresh and crisp, provide supportive pillows, and include small comforts like a bedside carafe or a pretty teapot for an evening cup of tea. These little touches make your room feel intentional and welcoming.
