SToday marks the first day of fall — cue happy dancing in boots and dreams of seasonal lattes. It was a perfect autumn day in Seattle as I ran errands: deciduous leaves are beginning to change and tumble among the evergreens, and the grass showed a light touch of morning dew. The air felt fresh and the sun warmed my face without being overpowering. In short, it was simply perfect. I love watching the soft mix of gray and white clouds drift across a bright blue sky. Thoughts of pumpkin squares and hot spiced cider are already drifting through my mind.
I enjoy the season outdoors and hope these pleasant days will continue, but I also get a little giddy about nesting indoors. After nine years of blogging about autumn, I’ve learned that while no two falls are identical—just like no two leaves are the same—the return of familiar rituals is part of the charm. This is when cozy ideas begin to fill my head and spill onto the blog.
There’s comfort in the season’s rhythms: coming back to the kitchen to simmer a pot roast or bake something that fills the home with warm aromas (even as I’m still learning the quirks of my vintage 1950s oven). Fall nesting means tidying, rearranging, and adding small touches that make rooms feel softer and more inviting. Puttering around to make things cozier and comfier is my favorite way to spend this time of year.
I’m naturally an introvert and a homebody, so I’m especially pleased when the weather draws me indoors to start those small projects and seasonal rituals. I may resemble a happy hermit from fall through spring, but I’ll be a content one — enjoying simple pleasures, quiet routines, and the peaceful pace the season brings.
Happy fall, friends! What are your favorite autumn rituals?
