TThe chill in the air and the turning leaves mean it’s time for one of my favorite fall rituals: eating soup. We practically live on soups from autumn through winter — do you?
Our dining room is still coming together, but it already feels cozy. I’d been looking for a plaid tablecloth in fall tones and found a lovely option at Walmart. It’s square, so we turned it on the diagonal for a casual, layered look that still shows off the table. The pattern brings in warm autumn colors while keeping the overall feel relaxed.
Walmart makes seasonal decorating affordable and easy.
Thank you Walmart for sponsoring this post!

I found a few other pieces that finished the look: woven jute chargers and a white enamel Dutch oven with a gold handle that’s perfect for serving soups and stews right at the table. It’s practical and pretty enough to leave out.

I also loved a sea-green glass vase that brings a subtle coastal fall vibe to the table. Mixing textures—shiny glass with woven chargers, baskets, and soft linens—adds visual interest. I added a turquoise taper candle for a fun pop of color, balanced by neutral and natural tones elsewhere.
Simple touches make a big difference: place a few seasonal items on the table, keep the rest minimal, and let textures do the work.

Courtney and I picked up fruit and mums at a local market and scattered them across the table. I love an organic, casual arrangement—nothing fussy. Decorating should be enjoyable, not stressful. Use what you have, take your time, and don’t worry about perfection.

Creating a comfortable mood at home doesn’t need to be complicated.

My husband jokes that real fruit and vegetables on the table double as snacks. I don’t mind—edible centerpieces cut down on waste and storage need. Simple, practical, and pretty.
You’re welcome. I know you appreciate simple decorating tips.

The dipped seagrass and paper rope baskets I used are also from Walmart. Natural wood tones and white pair well year-round. I love pieces that transition between seasons—today they hold potted mums; at Christmas they’ll be full of evergreens; in spring they’ll corral tulips. They’re useful and versatile.

I’m also fond of striped tassel napkins and rope-knot napkin rings for a subtle nod to fall. Napkin rings aren’t essential for everyday dining, but they are a nice finishing touch. Since I mostly use white dishes, changing napkins and rings is an easy way to shift the mood for a season or occasion.

Enjoy fall nesting in your dining room!
