In our English Tudor in Portland, we added a corner to the kitchen that felt like a conservatory or garden room. I loved the light that poured in through all the windows — it made the space feel warm and open.
Below are a couple of photos of that conservatory-like kitchen (we used to call it “The Castle” on my blog). These are screen captures from a 2007 video when the house was for sale, so the quality isn’t perfect, but they show the idea clearly.
Another view of the kitchen conservatory from my old English Tudor house:
A conservatory is a room with glass walls and often a glass roof, attached to a home and used as a greenhouse or sun parlor. Even if you don’t have a formal conservatory, a room with large windows and skylights can bring that same light-filled feeling and truly transform a house.

Long before the Tudor, I dreamed of having an English conservatory. In our first small house I even contacted a company about building a modest one, but we moved instead. Perhaps someday that dream will come true.
I’m always drawn to elegant dining rooms that open into light-filled conservatories — the combination feels both cozy and grand.
A conservatory overlooking a garden with white fencing makes my heart leap. It’s the kind of spot where you can watch the seasons change while sipping tea or reading a book.

Do you have a conservatory or garden room in your home, or perhaps a greenhouse where you like to spend time?
