It’s been about two years since our kitchen renovation, and I still get daily questions about it. Here’s an updated overview with the details and sources I’m most often asked about. Scroll down for specifics and product information.

I’m planning follow-up posts to answer individual FAQs such as whether we still like our marble and soapstone countertops, if we would choose beadboard for a backsplash again, how we feel about our range and appliances, and more. If you have a question that isn’t covered here, leave a comment and I’ll try to reply.

Sources and items featured in our kitchen

Rattan bar cart, our 30″ Ilve Nostalgie dual-fuel range in blue-gray, bamboo shades, brass range feet, pendant lighting, scalloped shade lamp, brass dinner bells, polished nickel faucet, farmhouse sink, wood whale board, decorative blue-and-white bowl, bird art print, café curtains and rods, toaster, salt and pepper grinders, cabbage dinner plates, coffee maker, and a blue pot used as a crock. Many of these items were chosen to create a classic, lived-in look while keeping the kitchen functional.

Hardware

We used a mix of finishes: glass knobs in polished nickel, oval cupboard latches and bin pulls in aged brass, oval cabinet knobs, classic drawer pulls, and a polished nickel faucet paired with a farmhouse sink. The combination of brass and nickel with some glass details helps keep the kitchen feeling layered and timeless.

Our blue range

After exploring many options, we chose a 30″ Ilve Nostalgie range for its style and value. It has performed well with daily family use, and we’ve had no issues. We placed the range and sink with some separation to improve traffic flow: helpers can work at the sink or access drawers without crowding the cook. The layout has made the kitchen very functional for entertaining and everyday use.

Paint color

Cabinets were color-matched to Sherwin-Williams Classic Light Buff and finished in a factory cabinet finish. If you choose a color match, request a sample since the factory finish can alter the final shade slightly.

Countertops and backsplash

We prioritized long runs of uninterrupted counter space for efficient prep. Perimeter counters are honed Carrara marble, while the island is soapstone kept natural (we do not oil ours). We also added a marble backsplash along most counters and behind the stove late in the process — it gives a cleaner, more timeless feel than caulk around beadboard and adds a classic touch that makes the kitchen look established.

FAQ: Where is the refrigerator?

Our refrigerator is built in to the right of the cabinets, across from the dining table. We chose a Fisher & Paykel counter-depth model that fit the narrower space available. Locating the fridge outside the main work triangle has been excellent for entertaining—guests can help themselves without stepping into the cooking zone.

The fridge sits next to our mudroom/pantry, keeping food storage and prep close together and out of the main work area, which streamlines both daily routines and larger gatherings.

Sink

We installed a farmhouse sink we’ve used in multiple homes. It’s deep yet comfortable to work at, especially for shorter people. Positioned under windows, the sink area gets great natural light and provides a pleasant view while working. The counter beneath the far window doubles as a buffet or prep area and is a favorite spot for working together.

Dishwasher

We chose Fisher & Paykel double dishwasher drawers to avoid a full door dropping into the walkway and to allow running smaller or staggered loads. They’re convenient, though we did have a couple of service issues in the past year; a multi-year warranty proved valuable. If you opt for drawer dishwashers, consider adding a warranty for peace of mind.

Wall and ceiling details

We used beadboard (tongue-and-groove) on the walls and a complementary tongue-and-groove paneling for the ceiling. The ceiling boards have a subtle v-groove on the backside for a cohesive, cottage-like character.

Cabinet details

The cabinetry is a mix of shaker-style and flat-panel inset doors and drawers built by a local shop. The factory-matched Classic Light Buff finish gives a consistent look; ask for a sample swatch if you plan to match paint to factory cabinet paint.

We balanced aged brass and polished nickel hardware with glass knobs to achieve a layered, classic aesthetic. Baseboards received an arched-foot detail for a traditional look that remains practical and easy to maintain.

Hardwood floors

We installed European white oak engineered hardwood throughout. The floors add character and a light, warm tone that suits the beach-cottage-inspired style while remaining timeless year-round.

Marble drip ledge

A marble drip ledge was added under the farmhouse sink to protect the cabinet below from water. It’s a practical, subtle detail that helps manage splashes from the sprayer and keeps the cabinet fronts drier.

Coffee station sources

Coffee station

We have a dedicated coffee cabinet across from the dining table. The sliding doors recess into the cabinet sides so they don’t protrude into the room. Below, drawers store supplies and table items. It keeps coffee essentials neatly contained and easily accessible.

Island cabinetry

Because our home is compact, we prioritized built-ins and storage. The island includes cabinetry for cookbooks, a recessed nook for a stool so someone can sit without blocking traffic, and open shelves for easy access. These design choices maximize storage and usability in a smaller footprint.

I rotate a blue-and-white toile café curtain seasonally and currently use a striped café curtain. We also have a simple stool at the island for quick meals or conversation with whoever is cooking.
