Late this summer I added a few new (and some secondhand) pieces to our bedroom that I hadn’t shared yet. As we head into fall, I thought I’d give a short update on the changes and why they felt right for the space.
If you missed it, one of my favorite recent finds was our secondhand Ethan Allen Quincy bed from Facebook Marketplace. I had dreamed of that bed for this room for a long time and never expected to actually find one, much less so soon. I happened to look at Marketplace “just in case”—and there it was. It felt like fate.
The bed suits the room perfectly. I love its lines; the whimsical curves remind me of gentle waves (our home sits on an island with views of the Salish Sea in Washington). The chunky solid wood gives the frame a substantial, grounded presence, and the robin’s egg blue finish keeps the mood soft and calm.

Once the bed was in place I started thinking about nightstands. The white ones we had were too wide and not the style or color I wanted. Our bedroom is compact and the space beside the bed is limited, so I needed narrow, proportionate tables.
One afternoon my husband and I stopped into a vintage shop that was closing. I thought I’d take a quick look “just in case” there was a small table that would work. I wasn’t expecting much since I needed a very particular size—but to my surprise, I found one that fit perfectly: the right height, shape, and a warm wood tone that complemented the bed.

There was only one of that table, not a matched pair. I like that. Mixing pieces gives a room character and personality—when everything is matched perfectly, a space can feel less interesting. I planned to find a similar-sized table for the other side to create a cohesive but intentionally mismatched look.
We already had two small white lamps to use, and a couple of vintage plates to hang above the tables, so the room could keep a balanced look without being too symmetrical.

The next day we visited a local vintage market and I immediately spotted another table that matched the scale of the first. It wasn’t the exact same wood—this one had a slightly darker finish—but the size was almost identical. Mixing woods adds warmth and depth, so it worked well. It even had a little scalloped edge that echoes the curves of the bed. At $20, it was a great find.
Having tables that fit the space properly was crucial. The softer curves on these pieces complement the bed and make the room feel cohesive without being matchy-matchy.

Another item I wanted before fall was a full-length mirror. Our closet is tiny, so we don’t have enough room to get dressed inside it, and we didn’t have a proper floor mirror in the bedroom or bathroom. I found a textured floor mirror that leans easily and complements the coastal aesthetic of the room. It can be attached to the wall for safety, and its curves coordinate nicely with other rounded details in the space.

People often ask about the bookcase in the room. It’s a piece we’ve had for years—originally in my dad’s office—then painted white when we moved. I love its shape and the subtle curves at the base. It ended up in our bedroom because we needed the storage and it fits nicely with the other furnishings.

The teal chair has been in our home for many years. It’s very comfortable and our dog Lily loves it—she used to prefer the back of the chair but lately she’s taken to lounging on the bed, too. Maybe she finds more comfort being closer to us now that she’s our only pup. She’s so sweet and I want her to feel safe and loved.

You’re invited! This fall in HomeBody Gathering Place we’re exploring practical and impactful design principles. I enjoy helping others create homes they love, so I offer exclusive lessons and weekly guidance in our community. Members can share photos, ask questions, and work through room updates together.
In October the group will focus on creating a cozier sanctuary in one chosen room. I’ll share tips and document my own cozy updates in a new room of our house. It’s a fun, supportive space and we’d love for you to join and share your home with us.
