Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover

Recently I’ve been sharing how I’ve been rearranging and refreshing spaces around our home. Last week I showed the “before” of our guest room refresh and promised to share the “after.” Here it is: our coastal cottage bedroom makeover.

I love the new look. I didn’t change everything, but a few intentional updates make the room feel completely new.

Guest Bedroom Design Details

We focused on finishing touches that add comfort, texture and personality: a new mattress, striped curtain panels with pom-pom trim, and a wood-beaded chandelier. These elements give the room a relaxed coastal cottage feel.

I enjoy decorating slowly and letting the room come together over time. It lets you pick pieces you truly love and wait for statement items that fit your budget. Lighting, in particular, transforms a space, so choosing the right fixture was worth the patience.

Because this is a small room, we needed a smaller-scale fixture. I often find great options in kids’ and teen collections from design retailers — similar quality and style but more compact and affordable for cozy spaces.

Waiting for the right pieces made the reveal even more rewarding. Each detail now feels considered and special.

Stearns & Foster Mattress

A Quality Mattress

The most luxurious update is our new Stearns & Foster mattress. My husband and I had a Stearns & Foster for over 15 years and moved it through several homes, so we were excited to bring another into our house. Good sleep is an essential part of a well-designed bedroom, and a great mattress makes all the difference.

This mattress isn’t like the lightweight boxed types. It feels substantial and well-built — supportive yet plush. Lying on it is like being hugged by a cloud: comfortable, solid, and restorative.

The mattress is also beautifully finished. The quilting, tufting and trim make it visually appealing, and little touches like leather handles show the craftsmanship. It’s a piece that complements the room’s style while delivering exceptional comfort.

This room has become a favorite spot in our home. The combination of thoughtful styling and the new mattress has made it especially inviting.

We’re all set for summer visits — and a word of warning: once guests try this mattress, they might not want to leave.

I’d say the room is ready — my work here is done.
