Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover
Recently I’ve been sharing design updates around our house. Last week I promised to show the “after” of our summer refresh in the guest room—so here it is: a coastal cottage bedroom makeover.

I’m absolutely smitten with the new look. The changes were small but purposeful, and those few updates made the room feel brand new.

Guest Bedroom Design Details
We focused on finishing touches that add comfort, texture and character: a quality mattress, striped curtain panels with pom-pom trim, and a wood beaded chandelier. These elements create a layered, inviting aesthetic without overcrowding the small space.
I enjoy decorating gradually and being patient with the process. Waiting allowed me to add pieces I truly love—especially a statement light fixture. Some fixtures I wanted were outside my budget, so I waited for something special that fit both my style and price range. Light fixtures have a big impact, and choosing the right scale and style matters.

This room is tiny, so we needed a smaller-scale fixture. I often shop sections aimed at kids and teens from established retailers because they offer well-made items in more compact sizes and at friendlier prices—perfect for short ceilings and small rooms. The right proportions help the room feel balanced and intentional.

Waiting for the right pieces made me appreciate each detail more. That sense of care shows in the finished space.

A Quality Mattress
The most luxurious addition in this room is the new Stearns & Foster mattress. My husband and I had a Stearns & Foster for over 15 years and moved it through several homes, so we knew the brand’s comfort and craftsmanship. Great sleep is essential to well-being, and a well-designed bedroom should prioritize comfort as much as style.
This mattress is unlike the boxed, compressed options you often see. It’s solidly built, supportive and plush in the right balance. Lying on it feels incredibly comfortable—like being gently cradled—while still offering proper support. The difference in quality is noticeable the moment you rest on it.

The mattress is also beautifully finished: detailed quilting, tufting and trim make it a visual asset as well as a comfort feature. Even the leather handles and thoughtful construction reflect attention to detail. It’s hard not to admire it under the bedding.

Everyone in the family agrees: this is now the best spot in the house. The layered textures, coastal palette and thoughtful details make it relaxing and welcoming.

We’re ready for summer vacation in this room. One fair warning: once guests try the Stearns & Foster mattress, they may not want to leave.

Guests tend to settle right in and make themselves at home, which is exactly the feeling I hoped to create.

Comfort is the priority in a guest room, and this makeover achieves that while staying true to a coastal cottage style.

With the key pieces in place, I feel the project is complete.
