Part of finding beauty in life is savoring the little moments. Much of life is stressful, busy, and ordinary. Some days are hard or painful, but scattered among them are small, beautiful moments worth noticing.
Those moments are sacred because they pass quickly. When we wait for something bigger or more dramatic, we can overlook the beauty that was right in front of us all along.
Since my children were born, I’ve made a habit of holding tiny memories in my mind—snippets I want to treasure forever.
- Sweet eyelashes fluttering over large blue eyes—those innocent looks I never want to forget.
- Chubby cheeks smeared with sweet potatoes—linger on that baby face to remember it always.
- Hugs with soft, dimpled arms—don’t let that feeling fade.
- Singing lullabies to a sleepy child—those quiet, precious moments.
- Two sisters laughing in the backseat—I want to remember how their laughter sounded.
- A little brother running to hug his older sisters—my heart was full; I want that memory to stay.
- Kids blowing bubbles on the porch—savor the sweetness, wondering if it will be the last time.
At Easter we had my parents over. My middle daughter was looking through photos to choose images for her senior slideshow. “Remember this, Mom?” she called, and soon we were all gathered, savoring memories captured in pictures.
We laughed, we cried, and we shared the small moments that would be easy to forget if we hadn’t preserved them in our hearts—and in photographs.
Treasuring those memories is what a joy-filled life is about. It isn’t about living perfectly or having everything go as planned, but about recognizing what is precious when we see it.
