Let’s talk about trends. Lately I’ve noticed a warm, buttery yellow appearing more and more in home decor — sometimes as small accents, other times as bold statements on cabinets or walls. I’ve never been one to chase every trend, but it’s interesting to watch colors and styles cycle. Butter yellow has always appealed to me, so it naturally caught my eye. Is it going to be a big trend this year? Possibly — and it’s easy to see why.
Over the years I’ve used butter yellow in several homes: walls and curtains in dining rooms and bedrooms, tiled bathrooms, and other cozy corners. My mother favored yellow too, and as a child I even had a yellow bedroom with vintage wallpaper and bedding that would feel very on-trend today. These experiences informed my fondness for the shade and the comforting, sunny mood it creates.
Trends often return. English Country style and butter yellow are trending now, but they’ve come back around before. When a look suits a home, it can feel timeless, but when we adopt a trend simply because it’s popular, we risk growing tired of it sooner.

Advice for decorating: It’s normal to think we love a new trend when we’re bored or surrounded by it. Mainstream trends feel fresh and safe, and influencers provide plenty of inspiration. Big-box stores make on-trend colors and accessories easy to find, which makes adopting them even more tempting. But before investing heavily, consider whether the look truly reflects your long-term taste.
Classic styles last longer than fleeting trends, but even classics can feel dated to you down the road. Ask yourself: when the next trend arrives, will you want to redo the room? It’s easy to underestimate how much a popular choice can start to grate after a few years.

If you’re unsure, dip a toe into the trend instead of committing to an entire room. Paint and accessories are simple, affordable ways to test a color. A bedroom wall or curtains painted butter yellow are easy to change later, while an expensive yellow sofa or a full yellow kitchen could feel limiting if your tastes evolve.
If you love a bold choice and are willing to change it later, go for it. For some people, playing it safe doesn’t bring joy. If a color truly sparks happiness, incorporate it in a way that suits your home and lifestyle.
Balance personal taste with what suits the house. That’s the approach I use in every home: include what I love but also respect the house’s architecture, the tone of existing finishes like wood floors, and the natural light. In some rooms I choose white or blue walls; in others, butter yellow is the perfect fit. When a choice complements the home, it feels intentional rather than trendy.

Mixing what you love with what works for the house creates a timeless feel that stays fresh. Consider the room’s light, architectural details, and fixed finishes before committing to a bold hue. That way your decor feels cohesive and easier to live with long term.
Do you use yellow in your decor, or have you in the past? Would you consider it now?
I write more about style and decorating in my books and in my member community, where I share ideas and inspiration for blending personal taste with practical choices. Exploring color can be a mood booster — seeing bright, cheery yellows in decor always lifts my spirits and makes me look forward to spring.
We gathered decor finds in a range of yellow shades for this post, and it was a joy to see so many sunny options. If you’re curious, try small accents first — a lamp, a planter, or textiles — to see how the color feels in your space.
