“My house is my sanctuary. I know you feel the same way about yours. A home isn’t meant to be a showplace for the world; it should first and foremost nurture your family.”

We’ve been particularly busy around the house this week, and it feels wonderful to focus on the spaces where we live. During seasons packed with book deadlines — which, for me, has been much of the last five years — it’s hard to find time or creative energy for home projects. Lately, I’ve had a brief reprieve from that pressure, and it’s given me room to think, dream, and act on ideas I’ve been holding onto.

This slower season has allowed me to enjoy caring for our home without haste. I’m getting organized and giving myself the creative space I’ve been craving. I’m sketching plans for the near future while also tackling smaller updates we can complete right now. Both dreaming and doing matter — dreaming lets you envision possibilities, and doing brings them to life.

Are you a dreamer or a doer, or a mix of both? I lean toward dreaming, with more ideas than I could ever execute. That abundance of options can make decisions hard, especially when you like every possibility. I don’t rush myself, though. I weigh choices carefully and move forward when an idea feels right for our family. I don’t take on projects just for the sake of change; I want our home to reflect thoughtful, intentional decisions.

I’ve never approached decorating like a trend chaser who must constantly update to impress others. I design for the people who live here first — our family, our routines, our comfort. That said, I love sharing the process and connecting with readers who appreciate the same values. It’s a joy to exchange ideas with kindred spirits along the way.

A home should be a sanctuary: a place that feels safe, welcoming, and true to the people who live there. When you invite others in, you’re sharing that sanctuary with them. So take your time creating a space that inspires you and makes you feel at ease. Building a home for your family is meaningful work — one of the best things you can do.
