Back when we planned our kitchen remodel, our goal was to give the small space as much character as possible without changing the footprint. We weren’t opening or moving walls, so every bit of personality had to come from working within the existing structure.
One simple decision made a big difference: softening two small doorways by turning their squared tops into graceful arches. That small change introduced a cottage-like charm that felt right for our home.
Our galley kitchen originally had three doorways, which isn’t ideal in a compact layout, but each opening served a purpose, so they remained. Since there were so many openings, we wanted them to read as intentional design features rather than afterthoughts.
The two interior openings were perfectly functional but lacked visual interest. We couldn’t enlarge them, so we explored options that would add personality without structural changes.
Because our house overlooks Puget Sound, we decided a couple of simple arched openings would enhance the coastal cottage vibe. The arches were echoed elsewhere in the house—our round kitchen window, interior door molding, and even outdoor gates—creating a cohesive theme.
The exterior door, which once felt like a heavy, closed-off element, was transformed into a much friendlier Dutch door. That change alone softened the room’s personality and improved the overall flow.
Between the kitchen and the hall, we removed an unnecessary door and reshaped the opening into an arch. The previous door crowded the narrow hallway; removing it opened the space and made the passage feel lighter. The arched top adds shape and a welcoming detail.
Adding the arches transformed the kitchen, dining room, and hallway more than we expected. The rooms now feel more interesting, inviting, and distinct. The curved openings also create a sense of height, which helps balance the cozy ceiling height in our home.
Of course, tastes vary—some prefer straight, squared doorways—and that look works well in many homes. But if you love arched openings, it’s reassuring to know that you can introduce them without major reconstruction.
