Host an Unforgettable Autumn Party: 5 Simple Steps

Outdoor Fall Party - Picnic Table - The Inspired Room
I I’m so happy it’s fall. As we’ve been settling into our new house over the last few weeks, I keep thinking about how much I love my fall routines. It feels like we moved in just in time to nestle in and enjoy everything I love about the season.

A couple of weeks ago, while things were still a bit disorganized inside, I decided we needed a fall picnic in the park. Even though I’m excited about arranging the house (and can’t wait to share another room post), getting outside on a sunny day was the perfect way to celebrate the start of autumn.

There’s nothing like being in nature to inspire you: watching leaves begin to change, feeling that first crisp chill in the air. If you love fall as much as I do, you likely want to spend as much time outside as possible. It’s a season to savor.

Near us at Discovery Park there’s an old rustic picnic table under a twisted tree that seemed to be calling us for a fall gathering.

The park overlooks the water and is filled with beautiful trees. The whole setting felt perfect for a rustic outdoor get-together. My daughter Courtney and I packed a tote with crackers, cheese, salami, grapes, apple cider and a few fall accessories for a “small plate picnic.” Pier 1 had sent a gift card and invited us to style a fall party, so we happily accepted — this type of simple, seasonal fun is right up our alley.

The rustic table and surrounding scenery made a stunning backdrop for our humble picnic. The accessories added a charming, irresistible touch to the scene.

Small plate gatherings are my favorite for casual or spontaneous events like this picnic. Using small plates creates a fun, intentional theme out of simple nibbles and bites that are easy to pick up at the market.

Crackers, dips, spreads and appetizers feel extra festive on special small plates. I found pretty wood plates that added the perfect rustic touch — I know I’ll use them throughout the season.

To set a rustic, festive tone we brought a wood lantern, wood plates, a chalkboard ice bucket, and organic-textured items like wood-handled flatware, a marble trivet, and woven placemats.

For personality we used a gold polka dot runner and navy cloth napkins (they stay put in the wind). Hammered copper mugs added a bright contrast to the wood plates and were perfect for cider. A battery-operated copper glimmer string sprinkled little lights across the table for an extra touch of whimsy, even on a sunny afternoon.

The display drew people in as they passed by — many stopped to admire the table and chat. A little effort in styling can spark conversation and connect you with others, even in a public park. We met several lovely people who joined in the friendly atmosphere.

If you want to host an autumn gathering of your own, look for accessories that bring warmth and texture: wooden accents, metallic details, cozy linens, and soft lighting are all easy ways to create a memorable fall table.

Also featured in our setup were horn-handled cheese knives, LED birch tree pillar candles, and amber glimmer string lights — small details that add charm and polish to a simple spread.

We put together a playlist perfect for a relaxed fall evening outdoors. Feel free to use it to set the mood for your own gathering.

I hope you get the chance to spend time outside this fall and celebrate the season’s beauty. I’ll be back tomorrow with another room tour!
