Entryway Lantern Lighting Ideas: Before and After Transformations

One of the first updates we typically make when moving into a new home is switching out wall or ceiling light fixtures. Replacing a few lights is an easy, cost-effective way to refresh a space, add personality, and set the tone for a home.

Recently we installed a new ceiling lantern in our entry. If you followed our bedroom refresh earlier this year, you may recognize the same fixture—I originally ordered the navy lantern for the bedroom and loved it so much I tried it in the entry as well.

When the lantern arrived I was immediately taken with it. The navy finish is soft and subtle, and the brass accents bring a warm, classic touch. It felt perfectly at home in the entry, giving the space a little more character and charm.

Here’s the light that was in the entry before the change.

It wasn’t a bad fixture by any means, but swapping in the lantern instantly added personality.

It’s worth trying a fixture in a different room than you first imagined—sometimes it just clicks. Although this lantern would have worked beautifully in our bedroom, once we hung it temporarily in the entry it felt like the right place for it.

The entry ceiling is tall enough that the hanging lantern doesn’t overwhelm the space or obstruct movement, even for taller people. At the same time, its scale is substantial enough to make a strong first impression right at the front door. I’ve always liked the casual, coastal vibe lanterns create, and this one helps set that mood as you enter our home.

The only downside is that I now need to choose a different fixture for the bedroom—but that’s a fun problem to have. I’m very happy we found the perfect lantern for the entry.
