Create a Cozy, Stylish Home: Tips to Embrace Your Personal Style

I spent time this weekend thinking about simple ways to make a home feel cozier and more welcoming for fall.

Your space doesn’t need traditional fall colors, plaids, or an abundance of seasonal props to feel warm and inviting. If corn husks, hay bales, or pumpkins aren’t your style, you can still create a comfortable autumn atmosphere that feels true to you.

A home doesn’t have to match a particular aesthetic to be cozy. What matters most is that it reflects what you love and supports how your family lives. Small, thoughtful adjustments can help your home transition from summer to fall without a complete overhaul.

Does the space serve your needs? Does it make you feel comfortable and content? Does it bring a sense of peace and readiness for the season?

This idea of “fall nesting” is about those subtle cues that tell us the house is ready for cooler days: setting a favorite pair of rain boots by the door, placing a light jacket or sweater on the bench for chilly evening walks, or swapping a summery throw for a cozier one. These little touches make routines easier and help the home feel more intentional.

Whether you tuck the kids’ fall sports gear into a pretty basket, corral outdoor shoes by the entryway, or add a soft pillow to the mudroom bench, these practical changes create an inviting, organized, and peaceful environment for everyone.

I love this mudroom by Sarah Richardson. Its bold blue palette proves that a room can feel seasonal and functional without a dramatic makeover. With a few simple additions, it transitions beautifully through every season and supports the family who uses it.

Sarah Richardson is known for designing rooms that are fresh, unique, and thoughtfully balanced—never overdone and never underwhelming. Her work is a great example of how color and purposeful design can create spaces that work hard and feel welcoming year-round.

PS. I’ll be sharing a post soon about where I’m finding inspiration for my own home—answers to a frequently asked question on the blog.
