Silver and Gold Holiday Table Settings for Festive Entertaining

Our dining table has always been one of the most seasonally decorated spots in our home. I enjoy dressing it for the holidays, but I prefer a subtle nod to the seasons rather than an all-or-nothing approach. I like to savor the transitional days between holidays and add small changes as the weeks go by.

Instead of switching everything at once, I swap a few pieces in and out, gradually layering seasonal accents. That way the table evolves and feels fresh without overwhelming the room. It also gives me a chance to enjoy the process of arranging and rearranging—one of my favorite pastimes.

Recently Wayfair invited me to take part in a holiday tablescape challenge: create a festive table using five items from a provided list. I loved the idea—challenges are a great nudge to get creative and actually finish a project. I chose five pieces that could work together and with items I already own to create a distinctive seasonal table.

The items I selected were the following:

I like to start with a neutral, season-agnostic theme—this time I focused on silver and gold metallics—and then introduce a few seasonal touches. Metallic pieces are versatile and timeless, so they work well across fall and winter holidays and help keep decorating costs down. Using classic pieces year after year means you can update the look by swapping small, seasonal accents rather than replacing everything.

The result is a pretty but informal table that blends the current seasons. An eclectic mix of chairs and relaxed styling keeps the look approachable and not overly formal.

I incorporated elements that reflect my personal style: a touch of the sea I love year-round, hints of fall with dried corn husks, and a bit of holiday sparkle. The metallic silver bowl I chose was even more beautiful in person than I expected. It’s marked safe for food, which is a nice bonus, but for this table it became a festive vessel for mercury glass ornaments.

For a playful overhead detail, I tied gold ornaments with nearly invisible fishing line and hung them from the lantern above the table. The floating mirrored spheres add movement and a unexpected holiday twist.

I used a tall amber goblet vase to display dried corn husks, which gives a seasonal, textural alternative to a traditional floral bouquet. These seasonal elements can be swapped after Thanksgiving for more wintry accents, such as whimsical figures or small decorative trees, so the table continues to evolve into the holidays.

Have you thought about how you could decorate your table for the season?

Simple, versatile metallics plus a few seasonal swaps let you create a layered holiday table that feels both festive and personal. Small details—like a bowl of ornaments, a textured vase arrangement, or ornaments suspended above the table—can transform everyday dining furniture into a special seasonal display.
