Your signature style - The Inspired Room

II’ve encouraged my daughters over the years to adopt a signature scent or wear a favorite piece of jewelry as a simple way to express their individuality. Even if fashion or decorating isn’t your main interest, choosing one consistent look or element you love can help you feel poised, stylish, and uniquely yourself.

The same idea applies to a home. Creating a signature style for your living space is achievable for everyone — whether you rent or own, live in a small apartment or a large house. Your home can reflect who you are, what you love, places you’ve been, and the life you lead. Those personal touches are what make a space feel one-of-a-kind.

I love visiting other people’s homes and sensing warmth and personality. That feeling of home and authenticity is often the result of a signature style that expresses the homeowner’s true self.

Recently, during a radio interview, the host asked why some homes feel “designed” while others feel personal and lived-in. One big reason is that a personal style creates a deeper connection — the home becomes an extension of the person who lives there.

Do you have a signature style? Maybe you haven’t considered it before. Or perhaps you have a general sense of what you like but haven’t defined it or made it distinctly your own.

A signature style can be expressed with:

– Unique furniture pieces that stand out

– Unexpected elements, such as distinctive light fixtures or quirky accessories

– A fresh mix of colors and textures you love

– An unexpected combination of patterns

– A meaningful collection that tells a story

– Artwork that resonates with you

In my own home I enjoy blending flea market finds, newer furniture, inherited antiques, and items I’ve personalized. That mix — a little old, a little new, and a lot of heart — creates a distinctive, personal look.

Even if you’re inspired by someone else’s aesthetic, your particular combination of pieces and choices will result in an authentic signature style that belongs only to you.

You don’t need a formal name for your style. Collect what you love and what works in your space. Use a color palette that inspires you, and seek out pieces that make your heart leap. Those choices will naturally shape your signature look.

Knowing your signature style is especially helpful when planning rooms or shopping for furniture. Most people assemble a home over time, so being aware of the elements that fit your style makes it easier to recognize what belongs and what doesn’t.

Once you’ve defined your style, remember it’s not set in stone. Style is personal and fluid — you can try new things, take risks, and continue to mix and evolve your look. As long as you stay true to your tastes, your signature style will develop naturally over time.

I enjoyed the responses to my earlier post, “Get to Know You: Your Style.” It was wonderful to see how many different ways people describe their personal styles. Pinpointing what makes a style feel like “you” can be challenging, but it’s also a fun and revealing exercise.

Do you have a signature style, or perhaps a favorite furniture piece in your home that defines your aesthetic?
